Summary

The Internal DEI Programs functional area champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive working environment and in collaboration with the Chief Diversity Officer (CDO) leads the development of a vision and effective strategy to create a culture for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Program Manager, Internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs directly assists and supports the Director, Internal DEI Programs in the development and implementation of internal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in support of AARP's strategic plan to create an inclusive working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed. This position reports directly to the VP, Internal DEI Programs.

The Program Manager, DEI Programs provides programmatic support to enhance behaviors, attitudes, and policies that support diversity, equity, and inclusion, assists the Director, Internal DEI Programs manage enterprise strategies to assess potential barriers and maintain and leverage a diverse workforce, and supports enterprise workgroups to assess the need for, and recommend training initiatives on, cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of diversity, equity and inclusion values.
Responsibilities
  • Provide programmatic support to the Internal DEI functional area team and all internal DEI initiatives including the Business Unit Commitment Process, AARP Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council, and the Strategic Engagement Employee Resource Groups (SEERG).
  • Assist with planning, managing, and evaluating events, programs, trainings, and initiatives.
  • Build communications vehicles and presentations to tell the story of internal DEI impact.
  • Provide status reports and project updates on relevant metrics to the DEI functional area.
  • Manage project tasks and deliverables for the DEI functional area.
  • Build presentations, organize meeting agendas and speakers, develop talking points, tip sheets and resource guides.
  • Collaborates with internal stakeholders to promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • 5+ years of experience in program management.
  • Bachelor's degree in education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management or any other related field is required.
  • Experience performing the duties described above may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Proven experience in planning, implementing, improving, and evaluating programs
  • Possess ability to understand diversity, equity and inclusion best practices
  • Collaboration and consensus building skills are a must
  • Excellent ability to write, communicate and share project updates
  • Ability to manage change and handle confidential and sensitive topics
  • Ability to understand, be sensitive to, and respect the diverse socio-economic, ethnic, religious, cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of employees across AARP
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged, difficult, or high-pressure situations

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work pressure, disturbances of workflow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are frequent and require significant adaptation.
  • The work environment rapidly evolves, requiring continual upgrading of skills.
  • Work is mostly sedentary, in an office setting with occasional outside activity.
