Summary

The Internal DEI Programs functional area champions the importance and value of a diverse and inclusive working environment and in collaboration with the CDO leads the development of a vision and effective strategy to create a culture for diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Internal Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Programs Director directly assists and supports the Vice President, Internal DEI Programs in managing the development and implementation of internal diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives in support of AARP's strategic plan to create an inclusive working environment where all have an opportunity to succeed. This position reports directly to the VP, Internal DEI Programs.

The Internal DEI Programs Director actively engages with all staff levels, from senior executives, managers, to employees and volunteers to enhance behaviors, attitudes, and policies that support diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Internal DEI Programs Director assists the VP, Internal DEI Programs with enterprise stakeholders to assess potential barriers and develop strategies to maintain and leverage a diverse workforce. The Director will also collaborate with enterprise stakeholders to assess the need for, and recommend training initiatives on, cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, and other topics designed to increase awareness and support of equity and inclusion values.
Responsibilities
  • Assist and coordinate with Business Unit Leaders to create, implement and monitor programs designed to ensure fair and equitable treatment of employees across AARP.
  • Assist and coordinate the Internal DEI functional area in implementing initiatives, including the creation of a culture for equity, diversity, and inclusion. Partners with managers and employees to ensure diversity initiatives and programs support strategic goals.
  • Implements strategic guidance for training initiatives and programs on cultural competency, gender differences, disability, sexual harassment, building a climate of diversity, equity and inclusion, and other topics designed to increase awareness and cultivate a culture of equity and inclusion values.
  • Supports the AARP Diversity Council. Engages employees to build a welcoming and inclusive culture at AARP.
  • Supports programming that promotes a working environment and culture committed to a climate of equity, diversity, and inclusion for all staff and volunteers.
  • Represents AARP to internal, stakeholders, and employees. Collaborates with internal stakeholders to promote and advance diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Establishes and maintains an internal process and reporting method to allow for effective measurement of diversity, equity, and inclusion programs. Assesses and monitors programs effectiveness and keeps the VP, Internal DEI Programs informed on diversity, equity, and inclusion progress and issues through regular reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • 7 years of experience advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion in a complex organization;
  • Bachelor's degree in education, sociology, social anthropology, public administration, human resource management or other related field required; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
  • Expertise in planning, implementing, improving, and evaluating diversity programs
  • Displays a proficiency in strategy development
  • Possess understanding of diversity, equity and inclusion best practices
  • Collaboration and consensus building skills are a must
  • Excellent ability managing change and confidential and sensitive topics
  • Demonstrated experience analyzing and developing policies and procedures
  • Ability to understand, be sensitive to, and respect the diverse socio-economic, ethnic, religious, and cultural backgrounds, disabilities and sexual orientation of employees across AARP
  • Ability to draft or effect policy and procedure related to DEI initiatives;
  • Ability to effectively communicate
  • Ability to maintain a professional demeanor during emotionally charged, difficult, or high-pressure situations

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work pressure, disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are frequent and require significant adaptation.
  • The work environment rapidly evolves, requiring continual upgrading of skills.
  • Work is mostly sedentary and confined to an office setting with occasional outside activity for training and intervention.
