Fairfax Water has an immediate opening for a Service Technician.  Under supervision of the Supervisor, Service Technicians responds to customer requests for connection/disconnection of water service, leak investigation, and meter inspections.  Supports Revenue Management objectives through meter replacement programs and disconnection /connection of water service due to non-payment.

Essential functions include:

Performs a variety of skilled carpentry tasks by: 

  • Responds to customer requests for connection or disconnection of water services due to emergencies or move in and move outs.
  • Investigates all types of water leaks, including main breaks, service lateral leaks, and plumbing issues located inside customer homes.
  • Investigates water pressure issues relative to service lateral leaks or faulty pressure reducing valves.
  • Performs small (under 1”) meter replacements scheduled by Fairfax Water’s meter management program or required in response to an investigation of low water consumption.
  • Responds to customer questions relating to Fairfax Water’s, policies and procedures.
  • Performs routine water analyses to identify chlorine and fluoride content during routine leak investigation.
  • Performs routine hydrant and blow off flushing as requested by customers and/or Fairfax Water’s laboratory personnel.
  • Performs various specialized services assigned by the supervisor, including essential work required after normal working hours.

Requirements:

Graduation from high school or GED and a minimum of two years related experience in customer service field operations or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

General knowledge of residential and commercial plumbing systems.   Ability to identify and use all types of small hand tools related to plumbing.   Knowledge of Fairfax Water’s meter and curb box locations preferred.   Ability to read and interpret ADC maps and distribution systems maps.

Strong communication skills and ability to interact courteously with the public and fellow coworkers.  Basic computer skills and the ability to learn SAP Mobile and basic CIC0 front office processes.  Good knowledge of Fairfax Water County’s geographical area.  Ability to work independently and exercise good judgment.

Chartered in 1957 by the Virginia State Corporation Commission as a public, non-profit water utility, Fairfax Water operates four water treatment plants with a combined capacity of 262 million gallons per day. The plants include the Corbalis Treatment Plant, operating on the dependable and free-flowing Potomac River in the northwestern area of Fairfax County, and the Griffith Treatment Plant on the impounded Occoquan River in the southeastern area. Water is distributed throughout Fairfax Water's service area through nearly 3,200 miles of water mains.

Fairfax Water produces, on average, 148 million gallons of water per day. More than 235,000 mostly residential accounts in Fairfax County comprise about 60 percent of total water sales. Approximately 40 percent of total water sales are wholesaled to Loudoun and Prince William Counties, the City of Alexandria, the Town of Herndon, Ft. Belvoir and Dulles Airport. Revenues in 2005 were $120 million.

Fairfax Water is governed by a ten-member Board of Directors composed of Fairfax County citizens who are appointed by the elected Board of Supervisors of Fairfax County. A General Manager, supported by a senior staff of engineering and business professionals, manages the day-to-day operations of Fairfax Water.
