Position Information

The Aging and Disability Services Division (ADSD) is seeking a dynamic professional nurse for its Senior Adult Mental Health (SAMH) Program. This program prioritizes independent living to improve/maintain the quality of life for older adults with mental health needs as well as individuals with developmental/intellectual disabilities. We are seeking an experienced, knowledgeable, and compassionate professional who utilizes a strength-based approach towards service delivery. The incumbent will join a team of dedicated professionals, including mental health therapists and psychiatrists who receive ongoing training in evidence-based practices related to aging. This Public Health Nurse will travel occasionally to provide services.

Responsibilities include:
  • Provide comprehensive nursing support to psychiatrists and clinicians in ADSD;
  • Manage medication administration across ADSD and reconcile CSB medications prescribed to Mary Marshall Assisted Living residents monthly;
  • Serve as clinical nursing liaison to coordinate SAMH services for Developmental Disability Services (DDS) as well as provide training to the DDS Support Coordinators;
  • Monitor and identify general psychiatry only (medications only) patients who require a higher level of care to mitigate clinical risk factors;
  • Administer injections to clients;
  • Access patient assistance programs as needed;
  • Coordinate and monitor Clozaril lab results with psychiatrists;
  • Comply with CSB standards of operation and adhere to requirements for documentation and productivity;
  • Ensure compliance with STEP VA requirements that align with departmental wide Same Day Access (SDA) protocols and collect related data; and
  • Collaborate with Public Health Nurses in areas of expertise to assist in providing clinical care.

Selection Criteria

Minimums:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from an accredited college or university;
  • Experience as a Registered Nurse in behavioral health nursing and/or community/public health nursing serving older adult clients with mental health, substance use disorders, or developmental disabilities; and
  • Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia or eligible to receive such license. If eligible, candidate will be allowed 60 days to obtain license.
Substitution: Experience providing nursing care in a behavioral health setting serving adult clients with mental health, substance use disorders, or developmental disabilities may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirables:
Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following:
  • Working in behavioral health, primary care clinics, or similar setting;
  • Community or psychiatric nursing experience or experience working with consumers who have serious mental illness; and
  • Geriatrics experience and/or experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities.


Special Requirements

Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers by the American Heart Association or successful completion of BLS Health Care Provider Course immediately after hire

Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.

A pre-hire background check will be made on all candidates who are selected for employment. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.
