Job Announcement

Responsible for the direct care of a majority male resident population, providing security and control in the Juvenile Detention Center. Duties include:

  • Monitors the residents living units, security desk and court holding during designated shift.
  • Provides in-depth counseling to detainees on such diverse topics as substance abuse, crisis intervention, mental health and conflict resolution.
  • Conducts group and individual sessions with detainees to help ease their adjustment anxieties.
  • Utilizes physical crisis intervention as needed to bodily control disruptive or aggressive residents. Supervises residents during unit activities, health, recreation and in the school program.
  • Performs security checks, wake-up and bedtime procedures, showering and hygiene functions, and unit housekeeping.
  • Writes behavioral observations and disciplinary reports.
  • Provides orientation of residents to the program.
  • May conduct transports of residents to and from court in either a 15-passenger van or a sedan.
Schedule: The position can be assigned to one of five duty posts: Floor staff, childcare team (7a.m. - 3p.m. and 3p.m. - 11p.m.); Security desk staff, childcare team (6:30a.m. -4:30p.m. and 3p.m. -11:30p.m.), transportation staff, court holding (8a.m - 4p.m.); NOC staff, overnight team (11p.m. - 7a.m.), reception desk staff, childcare team (6:30a.m. - 4:30p.m. and 3p.m. - 11:30p.m.).

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in social/behavioral sciences, law enforcement, or education.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid driver's license
  • The following certifications must be obtained within a specified time frame after appointment and recertification annually thereafter:
    • Medication Management required within 6 months.
    • CPR/First Aid required within 30 days
    • Handle With Care required within 30 days

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's degree in criminal justice, sociology, psychology, education, or related field.
  • One or more years of direct care experience working in a secure facility for juveniles.
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Previous JDRDC experience.
  • Ability to work days, evenings, overnights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather and/or emergencies.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, child protective services check, driver's license check, tuberculosis test, and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.
  • This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work during times designated countywide as approved for unscheduled leave regardless of the emergency situation (i.e., weather, transportation, other disaster).

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time, as well as periodic running. Visual and auditory acuity. Ability to physically restrain acting out residents. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to operate a 15-passenger van. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
