Summary

This position is located in the Product Design Division (PDD), Office of Product Development (OPD), Product Design and Development Directorate in the Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). The incumbent reports to the Design Manager. The incumbent of this position is an Apprentice for the position of Banknote Designer. The apprenticeship is of seven years duration and consists of supervised training in the various craft skills.

Interview: If you are selected for an interview you will need to submit a design portfolio. A total of 6-8 pieces of artwork/designs which may include Product Designs, Architecture, Still Life, Portrait, Landscape and/or Typography, at least one of these should be a hand sketch or drawing. Your portfolio will be evaluated in the following areas: Composition/Layout, Draftsmanship, Rendering and Perspective.

The following are the duties of this position at the Journeyman level which you will have the opportunity to learn and perform during the seven (7) year, structured Apprenticeship training program. The growth & development into this position will include being instructed in various processes listed, but are not limited to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the overall printing processes and ability to leverage new processes and/or equipment to better facilitate a design.
  • Develop design files using a variety of software applications.
  • Build strong collaboration with various offices across the organization to provide satisfactory design deliverables.
  • Develop an understanding of the limitations of manufacturing processes that may influence reproducibility, and use this data to incorporate technical information to enhance the manufacturability of the product.
  • Manage the balance between aesthetic and technical elements, as security drives banknote design.
  • Foster strong communication and teamwork skills in a dynamic and evolving environment that has high-levels of scrutiny and feedback that drive design decisions.
  • Appropriately interpret technical requirements to deliver a design that satisfies design achievable technical requirements.
  • Present design materials through informal and formal critique sessions using communication methods that foster constructive feedback and navigate various stakeholder reviews.

Physical Requirements:

The work is both sedentary and physically demanding. Moderate physical effort is required. The work requires standing, bending, lifting, and reaching.

SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background investigation and favorable adjudication. The background investigation process conducted by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is very thorough. Falsification discovered in security documents or during the background investigation process may result in an immediate negative suitability determination or immediate revocation of your interim clearance (if applicable).

- This is a bargaining unit position.
- The facility typically shuts down annually between Christmas and New Year's Day. As such, all BEP employees must take leave for work days during the shutdown period.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.

Category rating will be used to rank and select eligible candidates. If qualified, you will be assigned to one of three quality level categories, Gold, Silver, and Bronze depending on your responses to the online questions, regarding your experience, education, and training related to this position. A subject matter expert will be used in the evaluation. Your rating may be lowered if your responses to the online questions are not supported by the education and/or experience described in your application.
