This position is located in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) within the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The Occupational Medicine Nurse's primary responsibilities are to assist in the development, implementation, and oversight of CBP-wide occupational medicine policy and guidance, and provide technical and programmatic support to the CBP Senior Occupational Medicine Officer and the Occupational Medicine program within the OCMO.

  • Support the Senior Occupational Medicine Officer on drafting and establishing policy, guidance and directives regarding Occupational Medicine areas of concerns enterprise wide.
  • Develop and provide briefings and presentations to senior leadership regarding ongoing and/or developing areas of concern that may affect the CBP employee workforce.
  • Provide registered nurse level advice and/or guidance to existing OCMO physician staff regarding high-level health and medical related topics.
  • Develop, coordinate, and implement Occupational Medicine policies, plans and procedures for the OCMO.
  • Provide coordination and liaison with HRM/OSH.
  • Liaise and partner with other federal/state and local occupational medicine entities.
  • Provide support to pandemic (COVID) response efforts.
  • Provide immediate expert medical support to the CBP Watch regarding any natural or man-made Emergencies or disasters.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications required:
  • Knowledge to develop unique and innovative solutions to complex, large-scale occupational health care problems.
  • Knowledge of the DHS and CBP missions, along with the programs, principles, practices and policies of area(s) of responsibility.
  • Skilled in developing medical, safety and occupational policy, theories, concepts, principles, standards, and methods on complex and controversial issues.
  • Skilled in effective oral and written communication. Ability to provide authoritative advice to executive management.
  • Ability to plan, organize and direct teams and special project efforts across organizational lines.
  • Ability to monitor work progress to ensure that realistic objectives and milestones are established, and mission requirements are accomplished in a timely manner.
  • Must be a Registered Nurse (RN). Must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess and maintain a current, active, full, and unrestricted license as a registered nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

    If the position requires a security clearance, employees must have a SECRET or TOP SECRET clearance to placement AND must maintain that level of clearance while performing in the position.

    Selected applicants for a JDA are requested to fulfill the items below during the JDA:
  • Complete the DHS Training Course 15 days prior to the arrival to the JDA.
  • Complete the DHS Joint Duty Assignment Progress Plan to include:
    • Phase 1: Establish assignment objectives within the first 30 days of the JDA.
    • Phase 2: Complete a self-assessment of the duties performed at the mid-point of the JDA.
    • Phase 3: Complete a final review within the last 30 days of the JDA.
  • Complete 12 hours of professional development using Skillsoft courses, videos, and books in conjunction with the established assignment objectives for the JDA.
  • Attend each of the DHS Joint Duty Program Director's quarterly webinars (1 hour per quarter).
