Job Description:

Tutors will work with small groups of middle or high school students during the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) elective and Excel course during live instruction under the supervision of the AVID teacher. Tutors must attend virtual training in order to utilize the AVID learning strategies while tutoring between 2-4 days per week, or approximately 14-25 hours per week, based on the school schedule, site needs, and tutor availability. Tutors may be asked to support tutorials for schoolwide programming beyond the AVID class. College students are highly encouraged to be a part of this program. Priority will be granted to those who can meet the hours necessary to support the elective class schedule.

Qualifications:
  • Attends or attended a post-secondary institution maintaining at least a 2.5 GPA.
  • Possesses strong mathematics, science, or English background preferred but not required
  • Possesses excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills
  • Initiates action, is a self-starter, flexible and willing to grow personal technology skills and learn new routines; has general college entrance process knowledge
  • Is available approximately 14-25 hours per week on a consistent basis from October-May for onsite support in the instructional setting; possible consideration will be given to employing a small number of tutors who will support students virtually in special instances.
  • Has reliable internet service and personal device (laptop, Chromebook, etc.; IPad and mobile phones are not ideal for e-training or any virtual tutoring) and willingness to take part in online training.


Essential Functions:
  • 1. Assists students in their learning by facilitating inquiry-based content tutorial groups using a tutorial learning process and other AVID strategies through small collaborative groups.
  • Collaborates with middle school and/or high school faculty and other tutors to support and build the AVID Schoolwide system.
  • Assists students in maintaining their AVID binders & e-binders, Focused Notes, planning tools, and Tutorial Request Forms and Scholar Group Forms (TRF/SGF) that support academic classes.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by an AVID elective teacher or site coordinator.


EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION:

The start date is: Training- September 2021; School assignments start- October 2021

SALARY: $15.85 per hour for novice AVID tutors; $16.50 per hour for veteran AVID tutors

Clearances:
  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
