Manager, Capital Markets & Risk

Capital One's Economic and Managerial Capital (EMC) team is seeking a highly motivated, talented, and collaborative Manager to lead the hurdle rate and digital automation functions. The EMC team is responsible for providing performance management guidance to loan portfolios and origination decisions by assigning capital rates that correspond to the risk profile of the decisions and to provide minimum return guidance using discount rates both at Capital One & Reporting Unit levels.

This position will be responsible for overseeing the end-to-end production of our Hurdle Rate for Capital One and for origination decisions. In this capacity the candidate will be expected to own the methodology, to conduct external research on valuation techniques in the industry, for driving effective options to quantify the minimum returns our investors expect of Capital One, and translating them into differentiated returns by origination risk reward profile. The candidate will also be responsible for working across EMC Team and additional partner teams within Finance, Technology, and our Business Lines to prioritize and effectively communicate complex methodologies, requests, and analysis. This position will work closely with stakeholders in Technology, the Business Lines and beyond to seek opportunities to improve and create scalable next generation finance infrastructure for the hurdle rate process.

The role requires exceptional leadership, problem solving, innovation, analytical and communication skills. The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to establish and maintain strong partnerships across multiple teams to understand business strategies and their implications on the Economic and Managerial Capital team.

General Responsibilities:
  • Developing Hurdle Rate guidelines - This primary responsibility for this position is in setting the Hurdle Rates for Capital One as a whole and for owning and developing methodology for assigning hurdle rates to all Line of Business (LOB) origination decisions within Capital One.
  • Acting as a Capital Advisor : Partner with LOB teams in providing guidance around various capital related questions and hurdle rate framework changes.
  • Providing capital and hurdle rate Inputs to Goodwill impairment process: Requires working with the Accounting Policy team on providing inputs, variance explanations, impact analysis and methodology changes or improvements.
  • Actively participating in ODF (on-demand finance) efforts and Digital Agenda to automate processes, model monitoring, data input collections and using dashboard insights leveraging Python, advanced excel, SAS, Tableau or other relevant technologies.

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree or military experience
  • At least 5 years of experience within a financial institution
  • At least 5 years banking experience within a risk management, or in a valuations or in a financial planning function


Preferred Qualifications:
  • At least 2 years of experience in financial statement analysis
  • At least 2 years of experience with quantitative risk management (QRM) system
  • At least 1 year of experience with the Python programming language
  • Chartered Financial Analyst certification or Financial Risk Manager certification or Certified Public Accountant designation
