Duties

Summary

The Office of Marine Safety manages marine accident investigations, develops proposed probable cause(s) of accidents, formulates recommendations to minimize recurrence of similar accidents, prepares detailed reports for use by other international and domestic government agencies, Congress, the transportation community, and the traveling public, and improves public safety by advocating changes to international and domestic marine transportation regulations, requirements, and policies.

Responsibilities

At the GS-14, in addition to duties at the lower grade level, typical duties may include:
  • Responsible for the investigation of factors affecting the behavior of vessel operators and persons involved in the operation and management or marine transportation systems
  • Organize, manage, and coordinate the human performance aspects of investigations for major marine accidents and developing and presenting factual and analytical reports with safety recommendations for adoption by the Board.
  • Analyze evidence gathered to reconstruct the events before, during, and after the accident by applying the principles of scientific methodology, logic, statistics, and other fields related to interactions of humans, materials and machines, and the environment.
  • Write and complete factual reports, exhibits, outlines, and analytical reports. Present as Group Chairperson the technical views/facts before the full Board for acceptance, rejection, modification, or further study.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:
Specialized Experience: GS-14: You must possess at least I have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level directly related to this position. Specialized experience includes: Knowledge of the principles, methods, and tools used to identify and apply information about human behavior, abilities, limitations, and other characteristics to the design of tools, machines, systems, tasks, jobs and environments for effective human use in the maritime industry.

How You Will Be Evaluated

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants will be rated using the Category Rating System.
