Responsibilities

The Associate Director supervises the work of the Chief, Park Planning and Special Studies Division; SES Manager, Denver Service Center; Chief, Land Resources Division; Chief, Facility Management Division; Chief, Construction Program Management Division; and programs specialist in environmental leadership and sustainability. The selectee will be responsible for the following:
1) providing advice and guidance in reaching decisions on a range of management and policy issues relating to park planning, facility management, and land resource management; 2) serving as external and congressional liaison for the NPS; 3) directing program accountability and budget formulation in the functional areas of long-range management planning, facilities management, service-wide construction program management, environmental leadership and sustainability, special resource studies, and land and design; 4) managing programs involving the maintenance of standards in regard to engineering, architecture, landscape architecture, history, archeology, forestry, and natural and cultural resources; and 5) directing operations related to administration, including human resource management and equal opportunity.

  • Individuals selected for an SES position are subject to reassignment.
  • You must complete a one year probationary period as a newly selected SES, unless you have served the required SES probationary period in a previous SES position.
  • The Department of the Interior structures its SES positions into categories to determine the minimum pay for each position. This is a Category 4 position; the minimum pay for this position is $158,541.00. Pay is set based on consideration of the selectee's current salary and other factors.
  • As an SES you will be required, annually, to fill out the OGE-278 Financial Disclosure form.
  • Effective January 1, 2010, OPM must authorize any employment offers we make to current or former (within the last 5 years) political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-Career SES employee in the Executive Branch. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C or Non-Career SES employee within an Executive Branch, you must disclose that information on your resume.


Qualifications

We are looking for an individual with a proven track record of working with executive teams, and also possesses strong communication and interpersonal skills, has an understanding of and experience in park planning, facilities management, construction management, land resource management and natural/cultural resources, has successfully managed a large, geographically dispersed organization, and has attracted and retained a highly skilled and diverse workforce.

To be considered for this you must clearly show that you possess the experience, knowledge, skills and ability to perform the duties of an executive. If you are currently serving under a career Senior Executive Service appointment, are eligible for reinstatement into the Senior Executive Service, or have successfully completed a Senior Executive Service Candidate Development Program (SES CDP) approved by OPM, you only need to submit a narrative statement covering each of the Technical Qualifications (TQ's) listed below (not to exceed 4 pages). You do not need to submit a narrative on the ECQs which have been already certified by OPM. (SES CDP graduates should submit a copy their CDP program certification by OPM.)

1. Knowledge of, and experience in, policy formulation, budgeting, and developing and providing advice and guidance on a range of management and policy issues concerning resource protection, asset management, and visitor use of public lands and facilities.

2. Knowledge of facilities maintenance, construction programming, project management and operations sufficient to establish a strategic vision for and manage programs of nationwide scope, with extreme variations in climate, geographic distribution, historical and cultural heritage preservation requirements, and visitor use.

How You Will Be Evaluated
