Job Posting: Vice President for Philanthropy Job Posting: Vice President for Philanthropy SUMMARY: American Forests, the nation's oldest forest conservation organization founded in 1875, is undergoing a dramatic renaissance. Driven by our powerful, impactful servant leadership on climate change and social equity, American Forests has nearly tripled in size in just a few short years. This has been possible because our mission delivery and future ambitions have catalyzed a larger and more diversified philanthropy portfolio touching individual donors, philanthropic foundations, and corporate partnerships. Our next Vice President for Philanthropy, reporting to the President & CEO, will set the strategic direction for the organization's future fundraising efforts, building from our current momentum, and manage a dynamic team of staff and long-term contractors to execute this strategy. The VP will also help directly manage relationships with a select group of top institutional leaders and major donors. This means the VP must combine fundraising skills with the ability to understand and fluently describe the organization's programmatic work. Befitting this leadership role, the VP will serve as a key member of American Forests' leadership team. The VP will also have primary responsibility to oversee yearly planning, and to build out the Philanthropy Department's capacities over time to meet the needs of the organization. This includes lead decision making for all hires in the department. American Forests has most recently run annual budgets of $10-12 million. Driven by our mission and strategy, we see the need and opportunity to increase annual revenues up to $15-20 million in the next five years through balanced growth in individual, philanthropic and corporate support, supplemented by new opportunities with government grants. This envisioned growth includes the opportunity for the VP to plan and lead a catalytic fundraising campaign linked to our 150 th Anniversary in 2025. Finally, the VP will be responsible for assuring that philanthropy is integrated across the organization in a "One American Forests" effort that reflects our organizational culture of teamwork and collaboration. This will require engaging and educating colleagues across departments to empower their help in fundraising, and close collaboration with the Board of Directors to facilitate their assistance. QUALIFICATIONS: 10-plus years of professional experience, preferably including non-profit experience, with demonstrated success in a senior development function such as managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources. Tangible experience of successfully growing a diverse fundraising program, and successfully expanding and cultivating new and existing donor relationships over time. Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. Ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships. Strong organizational skills. Flexible and adaptable style. Leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives and generate significant fundraising results. Ability to work both independently without close oversight, but also a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside American Forests. High energy, results-orientation and passion for American Forests' mission is essential. WORKING CONDITIONS: Significant travel and some public speaking will be required. General office work environment. SUPERVISES : Director of Corporate Giving, Director of Grants and Foundations, Director of Donor Experience and Engagement, Director of Individual Giving, Senior Manager of Corporate Giving, Senior Manager of Corporate Relations, and Senior Manager of Gift Processing. SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES: In cooperation with the CEO and Board of Directors, lead American Forests' fundraising efforts to successfully meet specified annual revenue targets, including alignment of revenue sources with programmatic needs. Collaborate with the CEO and Board Chair to advance Board recruitment and philanthropy. Collaborate with the Chief Operating Officer to inform American Forests' budget, including projecting and tracking revenues during each fiscal year. Lead all aspects of strategy, work planning, and capacity planning for fundraising at American Forests. This includes overseeing research into funding trends, with foresight, to help strategically position American Forests for success. Identify, develop, and mentor staff within the Philanthropy Department to deliver high performance while maintaining a healthy and collegial work environment for all. Build out nascent aspects of American Forests' development program, particularly planned giving. Serve as an engaged and collaborative member of American Forests' leadership team, helping to provide overall leadership to the organization. Monitor and report regularly to the CEO, COO and Board of Directors on the progress of the development program. American Forests is an equal opportunity employer. Climate change is the problem. Forests are an important part of the solution. 1220 L Street, NW, Suite 750 Washington, DC 20005 Phone: 202.737.1944 Fax: 202.737.2457 Tax ID: 53-0196544
