Job Summary:
Westat is seeking an English-Spanish professional to join our Translation team. The translator will be responsible for producing accurate and culturally appropriate Spanish translations of survey questionnaires and related study materials. You will use considerable independent decision-making and critical thinking in collaborating with project teams to preform quick-turnaround translations and Spanish language-related assignments. New employees are expected to work remotely for first 2 months with some periodic work in the Rockville office during that time.   Position requires limited travel between Westat locations in the Rockville vicinity to support projects. 

Job Responsibilities:
•    Translate a wide variety of materials such as vital documents (consent forms), satisfaction surveys, research questionnaires, and reports.   
•    Conduct assessments of Spanish language proficiency for research studies employing field interviewers. 
•    Perform proofreading, editing, and terminology verification for exact meaning translations. 
•    Create, use, and maintain glossaries and automated translation memories.
•    Conduct Spanish interviews or prepare recordings.
•    Communicate clearly and accurately the rationale for choices and decisions made during translation.

Basic Qualifications:
•    A bachelor's degree is required. 
•    At least 3 years of professional translation experience. 
•    Must be fluent in Spanish and English languages. 
•    Familiarity with computer-assisted translation software.

Preferred Qualifications: 
•    American Translators Association (ATA) certification. 
•    Experience in survey or research translation, language proficiency evaluation, and translation to support focus groups.  
•    Experience working with Déjà Vu translation memories.
•    Skilled at translation of 2,000-3,000 words per day. 
•    Additional language skills are a plus.

Candidates must be detail-oriented to pick up small discrepancies when proofreading bilingual documents for exact meaning, style, punctuation, and language usage. You should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish, time management skills, able to meet deadlines and prioritize work assignments and work effectively in a team environment. Strong Microsoft Office skills and ability to quickly learn new products and applications.
