Job Description

The Washington Post Design Department has an immediate opening for a news designer.

Our designers are responsible for the presentation of some of The Post's most ambitious stories across an array of digital and print products. They are expected to push the boundaries of visual storytelling to provide readers with riveting, highly informative experiences.

We are looking for a journalist who can work well with multiple departments while flourishing in a fast-paced newsroom. Our multifaceted team is seeking a designer with a range of skills and a strong design aesthetic, including smart art direction and the ability to employ the right visual to represent an idea in a diversity of styles; fluency in HTML and CSS; a background in print design with strong news judgment; proficiency with using JavaScript to create brilliant interactions; development skills in React; and an interest in using best development practices to help design and develop new storytelling components.

The Post is routinely recognized for its visual storytelling across platforms, including being honored as the World's Best-Designed Digital News Experience in 2019 by the Society for News Design.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we resume normal operations, the position will not be eligible for remote work. It requires night and weekend work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Those interested should upload a cover letter, résumé and portfolio highlighting three projects. Please explain your contributions to those presentations (please package your portfolio in a PDF with a screenshot, explanation and a link so we can ensure that the work is viewable by all who need to see it) to our Jobs portal by June 30. All your application materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Creative Director Greg Manifold and Managing Editors Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
