Position Information

Arlington County's Department of Environmental Services is hiring a Traffic Services Technician to install, repair, and maintain signs which advise, guide, and regulate vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists that are using the streets and travel-ways in Arlington County.

Specific duties include:
  • Maintaining inventory of signs, posts, hardware, and tools on work vehicle;
  • Installing, replacing, and maintaining parking meters using a variety of hand and power tools, and bolting/drilling holes in assigned locations;
  • Repairing or replacing signs and setting up and installing signs for emergency street closures and detours to include i nstalling overhead signs using aerial lift truck;
  • Setting up and installing portable trailer mounted electronic signs such as Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Radar Speed Trailers;
  • Installing residential permit parking signs and keeping daily records of signs installed;
  • Determining materials needed for various jobs and using a computerized work order application, to track equipment, materials and work;
  • Updating asset records, including inventory information using an asset management tool;
  • Reprogramming meters and replacing meter signage and stickers due to rate changes or other requirements and collecting currency from meters as needed;
  • Performing underground utility check coordination tasks to ensure the location of meters and signage does not conflict with underground utilities; and
  • Performing measurements before the installation of new signage to ensure compliance with federal, state and local codes and regulations.


Selection Criteria

Minimum:
Traffic Services Technician I :
  • High school diploma, vocational school diploma, or GED certificate; and
  • One year of relevant experience in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of parking meters, pavement markings, or regulatory sign installation.

Traffic Services Technician II :
  • High school diploma, vocational school diploma, or GED certificate; and
  • Two years of relevant experience in the maintenance, repair, and replacement of parking meters, pavement markings, or regulatory sign installation.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following:
  • Certification for work zone safety; and/or
  • Experience with Cartegraph or other computerized record keeping systems; and
  • Experience using computerized meter management systems such as Cale Web Office or IPS Meters System.


Special Requirements

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license from the incumbent's place of residence according to the Arlington County Driver Policy. The applicant must provide Arlington County with a copy of their license/driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
  • Must possess the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Intermediate Work Zone Certification within one year of hire.
  • Traffic Services Technician II: Must possess the Signs & Pavement Markings Technician Level I certification from the International Municipal Signal Association (IMSA) or Signs Technician Level I certification from IMSA.
Work environment and physical demands:
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs or up to 20lbs of force frequently, and/or up to 10lbs of force constantly to move objects;
  • Must be able to walk distances and perform activities inside and outdoors for long periods of time in all weather conditions, such as high heat, snow, rain, hail, wind and humidity;
  • Must wear personal protective equipment while performing duties; and
  • Exposure to environmental hazards, including proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, chemicals, and working on scaffolding.
