Adjunct Faculty, Mechanical Engineering

The George Mason University Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the Volgenau School of Engineering, invites interested applicants to join the faculty as part-time Adjunct Faculty members beginning Fall 2021. About the Position: Adjunct faculty members are needed to either teach required course(s) in the major, or use their engineering expertise to develop elective course(s) that meet the needs of the program.

Specific program needs for elective courses should be centered on the NAE Grand Challenges for Engineering: http://www.engineeringchallenges.org/challenges.aspx> which includes themes such as improving urban infrastructure, making solar energy economical, engineering the tools of scientific discovery, etc.

Courses are offered at both the Fairfax Campus, Science and Technology Campus, and online during daytime or evening hours.

Expertise in the following course(s) are needed: ME 211 002 Statics (MW 1:30pm-2:45pm) Fairfax ME 212 001 Solid Mechanics (MW 9am-10:15am) Fairfax ME 221 002 Thermodynamics (TR 1:30pm-2:45pm) Fairfax ME 313 002 Material Science (TR 4:30pm-5:45pm) SciTech - Prince William ME 342 001 Design of Thermal Systems (MW 12pm-1:15pm) SciTech - Prince William ME 447 001 Computer Design (MW 4:30pm-5:45pm) Fairfax ME 552 001 Fund. of Naval Architecture (W 7:20pm-10pm) Fairfax

Responsibilities: * Prepare and teach assigned courses at assigned class meetings, based on course catalog description and approved course outline; * Prepare and objectively grade class assignments and exams within a timely manner, in accordance with course outcomes; * Maintain accurate, transparent student records; * Assist and foster student success through the maintenance of regularly scheduled office hours and timely responses to e-mail inquiries; * Adhere to all administrative university policies such as the timely submission of completed midterm and final grades; * Maintain appropriate professional development to stay current within assigned courses; * Maintain appropriate standards of professional conduct and ethics; * Other duties as assigned by contract and/or by the Course Coordinator including assessing course(s) taught for continuous improvement.

Required Qualifications: * Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field; * Excellent verbal and written communications skills.

Preferred Qualifications: * Terminal degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field; * Experience with a learning management system, preferably Blackboard; * Relevant professional experience; * Teaching experience at the collegiate level.

About the Department: The Department of Mechanical Engineering houses 19 full-time faculty. It offers a Ph.D. degree program and teaches Mechanical Engineering courses to support a major and minor in Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Mechanical Engineering was founded in 2015 and is located in the Nguyen Engineering Building (Fairfax) and Katherine Johnson Hall (Manassas).
