Summary

The primary purpose of this permanent full-time position, duty stationed at Petersburg National Battlefield, is to assist with overhauls and repairs to equipment, including vehicles, heavy equipment, and other types of equipment such as generators, chainsaws, welders, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with overhauls and repairs to heavy equipment. This may include end loaders, motor graders, dump trucks, power generators.
  • Assists with overhauls and repairs to smaller gasoline and diesel powered equipment. This includes pickup trucks, vans, and chain saws, welder, etc.
  • Provides routine servicing to all the above vehicles and equipment using guidelines provided in
    equipment service manuals.
  • Installs repaired engines, transmissions, outdrives, exhaust systems, shafts, propellers, reduction gears, steering cables, instruments panels and components, brake systems, etc.
  • Assists with diagnosing and repairing direct current electrical systems. This includes repairing and/or
    replacing alternators, regulators, switches, wiring harnesses, engine tune-ups, etc.
  • Assists with the operation, maintenance and servicing of the park's electrical power generation system.
  • Operates heavy equipment when moving equipment into and out of the shop.
  • Performs limited amount of buildings maintenance.

Petersburg National Battlefield is located approximately 20 miles south of Richmond, VA. It commemorates the 9 ½ month siege that took place during the Civil War. Petersburg National Battlefield consists of four sites spread across three local government jurisdictions. Each site has its own unique historic story. Summers usually average 85-98 degrees with humidity. Winters usually average 35-55 degrees with frigid nights and a couple of snow falls a year. Schools, malls, and medical facilities are available. Mountains, beaches, and Washington, DC are within a two hour drive.

  • You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You may be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You may also be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
  • You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided.
  • You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work.
  • Government housing is not available.
  • If you are a new employee in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Government Charge Card: You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority.

    Physical Demands: Works in tiring and/or uncomfortable positions for long periods. Work requires frequent bending, reaching, stretching and stooping. Often works on top of and under equipment in cramped or awkward positions. Does strenuous work while standing, lying or sitting. Frequently lifts and carries items weighing up to 40 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning and positioning parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with assistance of other workers and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, etc.

    Working Conditions: Works both inside and outside. Inside work is performed in crowded conditions. When working inside, worker is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures and noise that is difficult to talk above. When working outside, worker is exposed to bad weather. Incumbent often works in rain, mud, snow and cold. Inside and outside, the worker is exposed to irritation or discomfort form dust, rain, snow, cold, and fumes and from working on hard damp floors or ground. Works on parts and systems, which are dirty, oily and greasy. Worker is exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while repairing, positioning and moving equipment and components. Worker is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from solvent, fluids and lubricants. Follows prescribed safety practices by using safety equipment such as protective ear devices, hard hats and protective clothing.

    Travel, transportation, and relocation expenses will not be paid. All travel, transportation, and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the sole responsibility of the selected employee.
