Job Description

This is a two-year grant-funded position.

The Attendance Specialist leads the school division in efforts to develop attendance education and intervention programs through multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) framework. The specialist will collaborate with central office and school-based colleagues to design universal (Tier 1) materials and resources to promote regular attendance as well as review and implement group and individual evidence-and-research-based programs (Tier 2) to support students who are regularly missing school. The specialist will work closely and coordinate with the Truancy Outreach Specialist and the Director of School Social Work to implement a comprehensive attendance & truancy prevention and intervention program.

This job falls within the Department of Student Services and Equity.

Qualifications

Education: Master's Degree in Counseling, Psychology, or Social Work

Certificates & Licenses: Virginia education licensure in school counseling, school social work, or school psychology required

Experience: Progressive experience supporting attendance and truancy in educational settings

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Possess a commitment to condemning systemic racism and affirming educational equity
  • Demonstrates an understanding of multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS) and the role of attendance within the framework
  • Possesses knowledge of evidence-and-research based attendance prevention and intervention programs and practices
  • Ability to design instruments for assessing programs and then collect and analyze data
  • Ability to design and provide professional development to staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing

Essential Functions
  • Design and provide training and support to schools in order to implement Tier 1 and Tier 2 attendance intervention programs.
  • Develop and compile resources that may be used by schools and division-wide the promote attendance in ways that engage students, staff, and families
  • Research, design, and train schools on the implementation of evidence-and-research-based interventions (Tier 2) for students who are struggling to attend school regularly
  • In collaboration with the Truancy Outreach Specialist and Director of School Social Work, create a framework-specific to attendance that aligns with the division's MTSS structure
  • Serve as a consultant to school-based staff in the area of increasing student attendance
  • Coordinate with community agencies and partners, including social service and mental health services, for the purpose of meeting the needs of ACPS
  • Assist with the development and implementation of evaluation measures to assess program effectiveness.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and seminars as assigned for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform functions.
  • Prepare a wide variety of written materials for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • Research resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of providing appropriate interventions across all tiers of MTSS.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the department.
