Responsibilities

  • You will prepare and deliver graduate-level seminars and presentations within the core curriculum.
  • You will plan, develop, coordinate, and execute case studies and campaign analyses in strategic, operational, and political decision-making in the preparation for war, the conduct of war, and stability and post-war reconstruction environments.
  • You will participates in decision games and practical exercises as appropriate. Provides background instruction in specified areas. Arranges for presentations by authorities on particular subjects and issues relevant to the curriculum.
  • You will develop and evaluate student oral and written communication skills. Mentor student academic papers, staff work, planning products and briefs.
  • You will prepare and present instruction for faculty and staff development on a wide variety of topics relating to the incumbent?s academic discipline in support of professional military education.
  • You will develop, supervise, and evaluate graduate level course of instruction designed to meet learning outcomes established by the faculty and approved by SAW?s leadership. Ensure that lesson materials are current,relevant and responsive to student
  • You will participate in the Course Content Review Board for his/her lessons and prepares the report for submission to the SAW leadership, making recommendations for improvement in lesson content and method of delivery and assessment.
  • You will meet legal, regulatory, and policy requirements and they pertain to curricula and instruction.
  • You will serve as a mentor for student Future War papers that include a research proposal, formal paper, and oral defense. Provides faculty assistance and mentoring for students to select and develop their topics.
  • You will serve as a curriculum developer in support of new and current programs of instruction, reviewing and producing lesson cards, faculty guides, assessments, etc.
  • You will assist design and execution of a variety of curricula materials, including but not limited to case studies, decision games, planning problems, wargames, staff ride products, campaign analyses, practical applications, regional studies, etc.
  • You will research and write instructional materials, such as case studies, regional studies, lesson cards, faculty guides, to improve the content and delivery of the SAW curriculum, and as appropriate, that of other Marine Corps University schools
  • You will present papers, conduct seminars, and write articles, books, and case studies to contribute to the wider academy and to professional military education, either for publication or for possible use within SAW, MCU, or both.
  • You will represent SAW and MCU at meetings of professional and other learned societies in the incumbent?s field of expertise.
  • You will establish and maintain professional relationships with educators, scholars, scientists, and public officials in fields conducive to benefiting professional military education in the United States Marine Corps
  • You will provide support to Marine Corps University schools; outside-agencies, the operating forces, in the form of materials, consultations, seminars, course work, staff rides, and to foster relationships and enhance professional military education
  • You will complete required staff actions or projects to enable SAW to accomplish its mission.

  • 15% CONUS and OCONUS travel is required to military training facilities, sites of archival research, military installations, universities, conferences, and staff rides.
  • This position is eligible for telework.

OFFICIAL POSITION TITLE: Professor of Military History (ASSISTANT PROFESSOR (AD-03) / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR (AD-05) / FULL PROFESSOR (AD-07)

QUALIFICATIONS:
Your resume must also demonstrat at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the AD-03 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: a high degree of skill in written and oral communication in order to instruct in a professional military academic environment and to produce written instructional materials, articles, and book reviews for profession journals or graduate study. Teaching experience at the graduate level, in seminar, lecture , and working-group format. Experience with or in professional military education and military planning is preferred. Also preferred is experience leading or conducting staff rides, field studies, and other applied history methodologies.

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the AD-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: expertise military knowledge applicable to a wide range of duties with the broad functional areas of professional military education and academic administration is required, as is skill in using knowledge in complex assignments that call for extended professional expertise. A high degree of skill in written and oral communication in order to instruct in a professional military academic environment and to produce written instructional materials, articles, and book reviews for professional journals, or graduate study.

Your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the AD-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: an expert knowledge of the principles, methods and practices of the case study method, seminar leading, public speaking, wargaming, writing development and other techniques of instruction suitable for teaching mid-grade, professional military officers. Possess, or obtain within one year of employment, an earned terminal degree in a related field from an accredited college or university in a discipline related to military history. An expert knowledge in a specified field as it pertains to the study of wars, battles, campaigns, and current military institutions. Research experience that is progressive in nature, with proven experience in publication of results. Demonstrate evidence of empirically and methodologically sound, scholarly publications. Teaching experience at the graduate level, in seminar, lecture, and working-group format. A high degree of skill in written and oral communication in order to instruct in a professional military academic environment and to produce written instructional materials, articles, and book reviews for professional journals.
