Summary

The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Director of the Dental Services Department. Providing comprehensive dental health services to Indian Health Service patients. Providing direct services for patients, eligible individuals, non-beneficiaries, where applicable, and employees to include but not limited to vaccinations and testing for flu and COVID-19 within the service unit area. This position is located at the Mid-Atlantic Indian Health Service, Richmond, VA.

Responsibilities

  • Provides oral and radiographic examinations.
  • Provides diagnosis of pathological or irregular conditions.
  • Performs restorative procedures.
  • Applies corrective treatment in cases of abnormal formations.
  • Manages a single three-chair dental operatory and provides oversight to the dental staff.
  • Oversee mobile dental unit(s).
  • Provide mobile dental services as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, your resume must state sufficient experience and/or education, to perform the duties of the specific position for which you are applying.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; social). BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Degree: Applicants must have a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from a school approved by the American Dental Association (external link) (ADA) or the Commission on Dental Accreditation (external link) (CODA) or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. (A copy of transcripts or degree must be provided with initial application)

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Board Dental Examinations (external link) (NBDE) which are developed and administered by the Joint Commission on National Dental Examinations (external link) (JCNDE) and possess a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. In addition, to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below-

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

In addition to meeting the above education and licensure requirements, applicants must have one (1) or more full years of experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Examples include: Performing a full range of professional dental duties requiring standard corrective, restorative or preventive measures; diagnoses and administers treatment for dental diseases and dental health problems of greater-than-usual difficulty; and dealing with dental health cases presenting patient-behavior and communication problems.

Additional Requirements for the GS-12 (or equivalent) Grade Level: In addition to the above Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) level, applicants must complete a 2-year residency program in dentistry, oral health, craniofacial sciences, or a related medical science; or equivalent experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, and/or training.

Medical Requirements :Applicants must be able to distinguish shades of color.

Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. IHS may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their directly related previous non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave.

This position is not covered by a Bargaining Unit.
