Coordinator of Fitness

The George Mason University, Mason Recreation Department invites applications for the Coordinator of Fitness postiion. About Mason Recreation: Mason Recreation oversees three facilities on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University including the Recreation Athletic Complex (RAC), the Aquatic Fitness Center (AFC), and Skyline Fitness Center. These facilities boast four gymnasiums, racquetball/squash courts, several locker rooms, fitness galleries and dedicated rooms for yoga, cycling, group exercise, and marital arts/self-defense classes. We house and maintain a recreation and competition pool, sauna, whirlpool, and several exterior facilities including a pavilion, turf and grass fields, jogging/walking trails, and a team challenge course on our Science and Technology Campus. We provide the following programs and services for the campus community: Fitness, Aquatics, Outdoor Adventures, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, the EDGE (team building programming), as well as a Summer Youth Camp.

About the Position: The Coordinator of Fitness, who reports directly to the Assistant Director of Fitness, will assist the Assistant Director of Fitness with administration and oversight of a comprehensive program of fitness activity for the university community. The fitness program includes over 60 group exercise classes per week of patron interest and newest trends, design and delivery of specialized personal training programs, management of all fitness floor staff for three indoor facilities including strength training and cardiovascular areas, advancement of the university's well-being initiative, and budget planning and execution. Fitness classes include group exercise, cycling, aqua-related fitness classes, yoga/pilates, and instructional programs such as martial arts and self-defense. Personal training includes options for individual or small group sessions with administrative responsibilities including client recruitment, matching trainers to clients, record and database management, creating and implementing new programming opportunities such as clinics, workshops, and seminars. Fitness Center floor staff management includes program support, customer service, and enforcement of fitness center policies. The specific areas of supervision and responsibility of the Coordinator will be determined based on the qualities of the successful candidate and needs of the program.

The expectation is that the chosen candidate will bring energy, a willingness to grow, creative ideas, and commitment to take the program to the next level with the expansion of programming, resources, and administrative processes. The Coordinator of Fitness will possess strong interpersonal skills with the ability to foster collaboration and teamwork among a variety of audiences such as the residential population, student organizations, university departments, and community outreach entities. Skills in the areas of program design and implementation, equipment and preventative maintenance, risk management, personnel management, assessment, and marketing are essential to success in a dynamic and diverse environment. The Coordinator of Fitness will assist with fitness programming needs and will be cross-trained to have appropriate knowledge and familiarity with all areas of the fitness program.

Responsibilities:

Personnel Management: * Develop and implement an approved staffing plan for assigned staff which may include Fitness Attendants, Group Exercise, Personal Trainers, and Equipment Technicians; * Develop and implement an approved staffing plan for Fitness Program Assistants; * Recruit, select, train, supervise, and evaluate staff in accordance with Department and University guidelines; * Assimilate and disseminate a comprehensive body of information to employed staff to ensure effective team functioning, employee development and achievement of performance standards; * Assist with personnel management as needed and requested by supervisor.

Program Management: * The specific areas of responsibility will be based upon the skills of the chosen candidate and needs of the program including group exercise, personal training, equipment technicians, Fitness Attendant staff supervision as well as programming elements; * Areas of responsibility may include Fitness Attendants, group exercise, personal trainers, assigned instructor staff, and equipment technicians; * Create and maintain schedules; * In the event of an employee no-show, the Coordinator will either locate a suitable substitute or cover the shift to ensure the facility is staffed and classes are not cancelled; * Develop program marketing and policies and procedures related to all assigned programming. Establish criteria for creating new programs, workshops, and special events in keeping with student, faculty, staff and community interests and current trends. Maintain a wide variety of program choices to meet the needs of a diverse University community; * Assist with the coordination of research, assessment and program/service evaluation for fitness programs and services. Develop evaluation tools to assess individual programs and provide regular feedback to staff; * Facilitate marketing and instruct preparation courses for fitness programs; * Collaborate with other campus groups to enhance the educational and fitness opportunities for George Mason University students and contribute to their well-being; * Work closely with student organizations and faculty to enhance campus educational and leadership opportunities and collaborate on campus-wide events.

Administration and Planning: * Assist with assessment as it relates to fitness and well-being; * Compose, compile, and present reports including an annual report summarizing the accomplishments and challenges in fitness. Responsible for the lead role in risk management of the fitness related staff, programs, facilities, and equipment; * Train staff in risk management and emergency procedures; * Track staff certifications related to specific position requirements as well as CPR/AED and First Aid; * Serve as fitness representative on the departmental risk management committee.
Fiscal Management: * Assist with the preparation and monitoring of the annual Fitness budgets for the Recreation Department fitness areas, fitness programs, events, and staffing under their supervision; * Assist with the production of monthly reports to ensure adequate controls and efficient use of financial resources; * Assist with the preparation and analyzing of daily reports, participation statistics, payroll, inventory, and all financial transactions maintaining accountability.
Facility Management: * Provide and maintain a safe and secure fitness environment for customers and staff at all Recreation Department facilities; * Assist with the development and implementation of customer service policies, systems, and training programs that provide for pleasant, timely, and knowledgeable service; * Implement policies and procedures according to Department expectations and timelines; * Assist with the purchase of equipment; review specifications, prepare requisitions and confirm accuracy of invoices; serve as liaison to vendors and contractors; * Communicate effectively with facilities staff regarding adequate fitness floor staffing and express any facility needs.

Professional Development: * Continue to develop professionally through membership and participation in applicable professional organizations and developmental workshops; * Actively participate in the educational process of George Mason University students, faculty, and staff through their interaction with our programs and services; * Serve on Campus Committees as requested in cooperation with campus related initiatives; * Provide students and staff with opportunities for professional development through various organizations, workshops, and clinics.

Other Duties: * Perform other duties as requested.

Required Qualifications: * Bachelor's Degree in Exercise Science/Physiology, Recreation, Athletic Administration, Physical Education, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience; * Demonstrated relative experience in a recreation or fitness setting; experience in group fitness and/or personal training. * Experience in proper use and management of cardiovascular and weight training equipment; * Demonstrated ability for clear, written and verbal communication; * Must possess excellent customer service skills and the ability to be flexible and accommodating as it relates to the needs of the members; * Extensive knowledge related to recreational programming and pertinent rules and policies is necessary; * Should be adept and relate well to diverse individuals while demonstrating the skills to manage a large staff; * The individual should possess the necessary background to train, supervise, and motivate student leaders for the fitness program while providing leadership and guidance to a diverse program; * The Coordinator will have the knowledge and skills to manage budgets; * The Coordinator will also foster a positive work environment and encourage collaboration and teamwork; * This individual will exhibit leadership skills and be able to provide feedback while also implementing suggestions from feedback they have received; * A commitment to making an active and meaningful contribution to the university's well-being initiative is necessary; * The individual should be capable of lifting moderate loads and performing equipment set-ups for various recreational activities; * Must possess or be capable of attaining one or more professional fitness certifications accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) such as NASM, NSCA, ACE, ACSM, AFAA; * Must possess or be capable of attaining American Red Cross AED, CPR and First Aid certification within 3 months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications: * Master's Degree in Exercise Science/Physiology, Recreation, Athletic Administration, Physical Education, or a related field; * 3 or more years of relative experience in a recreation or fitness setting; * American Red Cross AED, CPR and First Aid instructor certification.
