Responsibilities

Required to operate the following types of equipment; a 36-passenger bus, vans (including wheelchair vans), trucks (including 2 ½ ton), station wagons, sedans and other necessary equipment in order to carry out the functions of the Transportation Unit. Incumbent transports patients, medical records, medical equipment, supplies, linen, mail, VAMC personnel and other items essential to the operation of this Medical Center. Incumbent will be required to operate all vehicle types both on and off-station; this is a regular and recurring function of this position. Incumbent operates gasoline, diesel, electric or alternative fuel powered vehicles of all types with heavy loads and is required to load and unload vehicles. Incumbent is required to routinely operate passenger buses loaded with patients and employees and will frequently make special touring trips to different locations as requested by Recreation Service. Incumbent may operate special purpose vehicles equipped with a power take off and levers, buttons, pedals, etc. to control the equipment.

Preforms other directly related duties as assigned.

Must possess and maintain a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with passenger bus endorsement issued through the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Must be well versed in state, federal, municipal and VAMC laws and regulations governing the operation of motor vehicles.

Must be qualified and experienced to operate vehicles which have a gross weight of more than 26,000 pounds and operate passenger buses or passenger ambulances regardless of gross vehicle weight.

Must have knowledge of administering first aid, including the use of oxygen in emergencies and use sound judgment in the absence of professional advice in transporting of handling patients.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 9:30am - 6pm. Must have the flexibility to work outside the normal tour of duty which may include weekends and holidays.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements. Daily duties performed by incumbent consist of climbing in and out of vehicles in all weather conditions, pushing and pulling laundry carts and ambulance stretchers; sometime lifting heavy freight, equipment, supplies, etc., climbing steps, loading and unloading patients on stretchers in ambulance, and driving long hours on trips.

Must be physically sound and be able to successfully pass the required annual Department of Transportation commercial driver physical. Critical duties require the incumbent to have good coordination of eyes, hands, feet, and good vision and depth perception. Must be mentally alert to traffic hazards and dangers of the highway.

Working Conditions. While driving vehicles incumbent is exposed to all types of hazards of the highway and is subject to all types of weather. Incumbent is also exposed to patients with all types of diseases, viruses, etc. while transporting in closed vehicles. Performs any other duties properly assigned, which may include snow and ice removal during extreme circumstances or emergency situations.
