Job DetailsJob LocationAmerican Psychiatric Association HQ - Washington, DCPosition TypeFull TimeTravel PercentageUp to 50% POSITION SUMMARYThe APA Foundation Executive Director (ED) works with the Chair of the Board, the Board, and staff to provide leadership, vision, and execution on the delivery of programs, fundraising, and fellowships on behalf of its sole member APA. The ED keeps in mind when speaking and fundraising that he/she is doing this in the name of and on behalf of the field of Psychiatry and its member, the APA. The Executive Director will raise the visibility of the Foundation and enhance the already strong programmatic work. In addition, the incumbent will maintain current level of support from funders and work to increase the support for the Foundation from members of APA, corporations, foundations, the public, and other individuals.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESIncrease awareness of the APA Foundation and the valuable work in which it is engaged using foundation administration/staff to drive the increased awarenessResponsible for fundraising and developing resources necessary to support the Foundations missionGrow general awareness and fund size to ensure the achievement of the Foundations long-term visionReview the current foundation strategic plan/direction and recommend any changes to the Foundation Board Chair and Board for consideration and approval to achieve long-term Foundation success and execute approved strategies to the fullestEnsure the Board Chair and Board is kept fully informed on the condition of the organization and all-important factors influencing itProvide leadership in developing programs, organizational, and financial plans with the Foundation Board Chairs review and support. Carry out plans and policies authorized by the BoardMaintain working knowledge of the latest trends in generating revenue to advance an organizations mission ie Text to Give, etc.Develop and sustain a diverse funding baseAbility to report out fundraising results using technology and real time data capture with access to dashboards and fundraising metrics of greatest importance to success of FoundationManage external grant programs that increase the awareness of field of Psychiatry Helping Hands grant programMinority Achievement Awards programEstablish sound working relationships, and cooperative arrangements with partner organizations, individual donors, and corporate fundersServe as the primary spokesperson to constituents, the media, and the general public for the FoundationManage and grow APAF Fellowship programMaintain excellent working relationship with SAMHSA program officeWork with Legacy committee to grow fellowships on a consistent basis Establish metrics for the program and ensure program overachieves against those metricsWork closely with the APA administration to ensure effective marketing, public and community relations, and communication effortsRecruit and develop an effective foundation administration/staff team, with appropriate provisions for succession, is in placeMaintain a climate that attracts, keeps, and motivates a diverse staff and volunteer team of top-quality peopleWork with the program staff, finance staff, and the board in preparing an annual budget, seeing that the organization operates within guidelinesPerform other duties as assignedREQUIRED SKILLS, EXPERIENCE, AND QUALIFICATIONS Masters degree in a related field or 10-15 years of senior management experienceFundraising experience including strong knowledge of fundraising strategies and the importance of donor relations, and fundraising historyExperience scaling an organization and working with large corporations and their CEOsAn engaging, proven public speaker with strong written communication skillsAbility to gather, analyze, present and act on detailed financial data related to the overall health and well-being of an organizationPossess an aggressive growth mindset, a collaborative work style, and successful team building skillsAbility to communicate with a broad range of people within a very diverse cultural mix, from consumers to government representativesEnsure the organization is forward-focused with the ability to build a sense of shared purpose and commitment in othersAbility to network outside and inside the organization and build positive strategic relationships with key individuals and groupsAbility to address problems and challenges, moving beyond the standard methods and solutions, and keeping the APA Foundation ahead of the curveManage the APA Foundations financial performance and understand key financial indicatorsMust act ethically to safeguard confidential information and adhere to the APA Foundation mission and core valuesPHYSICAL DEMANDSNormal demands associated with an office environment. Ability to work on computer for prolonged periods, communicate with individuals by telephone, e-mail, Microsoft Office, video conference, and face-to-face. Moderate Travel is required (weekdays and weekends).
