Summary

The selectee of this position serves as a Industrial Hygienist responsible for advising on the identification, evaluation, and mitigation of conditions affecting the health of employees and, occasionally, on the health of citizens adjacent to USMS structures and activities.

This position is located in the Management Services Division, Arlington, Virginia.

Responsibilities

As a Industrial Hygienist at the GS-0690-13 grade level, some of your typical work assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Conducting surveys and significant research and analyses of existing facilities and recommends industrial hygiene improvements and reviews cost estimates.
  • Developing industrial hygiene criteria and standards for use in managing contracts that enable control of chemical, biological, and physical hazards to working populations.
  • Conducting on-site detailed inspections to ensure that industrial hygiene considerations conform to USMS design standards and approved plans
  • Participating in the conduct of nationwide surveys to document the condition of USMS detention facilities. Evaluates data and projects resources necessary to correct deficiencies.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position, you must meet the basic requirements and minimum qualifications as defined below:

Basic Requirements

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.

All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the basic requirements above, to be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the education and/or experience required for the grade level(s) to which you apply.

GS-13
Specialized Experience: Experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. You must have at least one year (12 months) of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service performing the following duties:
  • Evaluate, study, and report industrial hygiene findings to establish new standards and controls to improve safety and health in working environments;
  • Perform inspections and provide advice and direction in a range of industrial hygiene matters; and
  • Conduct field surveys to obtain industrial hygiene data such as exposure data.

    Education

    Physical Demands: The work can be mainly sedentary in nature while in the office, but field work requires ·physical exertion such as constant walking, lifting, standing, and bending. The incumbent must have the ability to survey space and equipment requirements in offices, storerooms, boiler and equipment rooms, electrical and telephone closets, loading docks, building roofs, elevator shafts, and various other types of construction areas. The incumbent will carry specification books, blueprints, portable computers, and other construction documents.

    Working Environment: During surveys, the employee is exposed to all the risks and discomforts associated with industrial activities of the USMS. This potentially includes noise and toxic chemicals, and exposure requires the use of protective clothing and equipment, including respirators, hardhats, and ear protectors. Mandatory overtime and compensatory time may be required. Schedule breaks and/or lunch periods may be delayed in order to complete duties. Substantial travel nationwide, involving travel 50 percent or more work night per month, may be required.
