Summary

This position has major responsibility for monitoring and evaluating metabolism, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic, and biopharmaceutics research program related to the discovery, formulation and development of new medications for drug abuse treatment research. This position is also responsible for key aspects of the research and production of new novel chemical compounds with potential for drug abuse treatment.

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for managing a research program of grants and contracts evaluating chemical design, synthesis, formulation, metabolism, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic, and biopharmaceutics related to the discovery and development of new medications for drug abuse treatment research. The focus of this position is the formulation of drug products, which includes design, manufacturing, quality control, packaging, labeling, storage and stability. The employee is also responsible for key aspects of the research and production of new novel chemical compounds with potential for drug abuse treatment. He or she will establish and maintain liaison with prominent members of the scientific community to continually evaluate the adequacy of pharmaceutical research in the area of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and initiate efforts to direct research to underrepresented areas in the field.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Chemist, GS-1320 position, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's or graduate or higher degree in physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics OR a combination of education and experience course work equivalent to a major as shown above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition, in order to qualify for a Chemist position, at the GS-13 level, you must have 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-12 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, performing the following types of tasks: planning and developing scientific experiments and projects in support of chemical research; calibrating complex laboratory instruments; overseeing the operations of a chemical laboratory, equipment and personnel; and reviewing and presenting periodic laboratory reports regarding experimental results.
