Academic Gastroenterologist - Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Richmond, Virginia has an opening for a full-time Academic Gastroenterologist to serve as Chief of the Gastroenterology Section. Candidates must be BC/BE in Gastroenterology and have experience in the full range of gastroenterology clinical services to treat conditions affecting the GI system.

Responsibilities

The Central Virginia VA Health Care System (CVHCS) invite applications for an innovative and inspirational faculty leader for the position of Chief, Section of Gastroenterology. The CVHCS is based in Richmond, Virginia and serves a diverse veteran population of 62,000. The incumbent is accountable to the Chief of Medicine assuring the most effective delivery of care in services within Medical Service.

The section is multifaceted with multiple physician-scientists, clinician-investigators, and clinician-educators and offers a wide range of services including Advanced Therapeutic Endoscopy, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Esophageal Motility, Metabolic Liver Disease, ERCP, Clinical Research, and Liver Transplantation.

The candidate must be a board-certified/eligible Gastroenterologist with demonstrated national leadership experience clinically and in basic and/or clinical research. Prior experience in administration and/or leading clinical and research initiatives is preferred. Candidates at the rank of Associate or Full Professor will be considered.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday; 8:00AM to 4:30PM; however, subject to change, depending on the needs of the service/medical center.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience:
  • Graduated with MD or DO from an accredited medical school
  • Successful completion of an Internal Medicine Residency
  • Successful completion of an accredited GI/Hepatology Fellowship
  • Board Eligibility or Certification - ABIM GI
  • 1-2 years' work experience in inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology/Hepatology
  • Experience in academics- teaching medical trainees to include GI fellows, residents, and medical students
  • Experience in inpatient GI management of patients including therapeutic endoscopies and colonoscopies in the setting of GI bleeding
  • Experience in outpatient management of acute and chronic GI and hepatology conditions
  • Experience in the management of patients who are being evaluated for liver transplant and who have previously received a liver transplant
  • Experience in performing outpatient endoscopies and colonoscopies and ability to read capsule endoscopies.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills with ability to function at a high level in a complex, busy clinical environment
  • Ability to perform advanced endoscopy including ERCP, EUS, stenting, and/or complex EMR
Preferred Experience: Completion of ACGME accredited fellowship in Gastroenterology and background in clinical research and clinical education. Prefer the incumbent is board certified or board eligible. ERCP and EUS are desirable but not necessary.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting, 15-44 pounds; straight pulling (4 hours); pushing (4 hours); reaching above shoulder; use of fingers; both hands required; walking (2 hours);standing (7 hours); kneeling (1 hour); repeated bending (4 hours); both legs required; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; far-vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other; ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing (aid permitted); mental and emotional stability required.
