This Direct-Hire position is in the Food and Drug Administration and is located in the Federal Drug Administration (FDA, Office of the Chief Scientist, Office of Laboratory safety which develops, centralizes, standardizes, and implements policies; planning, directing, managing, and evaluating activities for these programs and implementing best practices across FDA to ensure the health and safety of all FDA employees.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the Radiation Officer in providing management and guidance to FDA?s broad scope Radiation Safety Program, informing and interpreting applicable regulations, and implementation of specific policies and procedures.
  • Serves as consultant in the design and conduct of experiments using radiation sources to ensure that exposures to personnel are as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
  • Responds to emergencies involving radiation and radioactive materials, making judgements and recommendations leading to a successful return to normal conditions.
  • Provides decisions and recommendations with respect to application and adaptation of standards and regulations that have a substantial impact of the radiation safety program.
  • Presents instructions to groups of employees on specific radiation safety and health concerns.
  • Provides technical guidance to contracting officials in the administration of contracts required for the support of the overall Radiation Safety Program.

Qualifications

The position of Health Physicist falls under the 1306 occupational series. To qualify for this position at grade GS-13, you must meet the following:

Applicants must meet the Basic Requirement AND Specialized Experience as stated below:

Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

Minimum Qualifications:

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE:
You must possess 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, GS-12 or equivalent band level of responsibility in the Federal service, that includes experience: conducting laboratory inspections to ensure compliance with policy and regulations; providing advice and consultation to management on policy and procedures; developing solutions to solve radiation and health physics problems; and ensuring all staff are properly trained as required by policy.

NOTE: Voluntary experience may be used to qualify.
