WHAT IS THE Small Business/Self Employed (SB/SE) DIVISION? The Small Business/Self-Employed (SB/SE) Division provides examinations and taxpayer education services for about 7 million small businesses and upwards of 33 million self-employed and supplemental income taxpayers.

Responsibilities

WHAT DOES AN EXAMINATION TECHNICIAN DO? As an Examination Technician you will be involved in a full range and variety of examining support tasks including the securing of information, correcting of computations, assembling and presenting of work and findings, reconstructing of taxpayer histories, refiguring tax discrepancies and liabilities, spotting trends and identifying discrepancies. You will be responsible for a segment or phase of the audit, which will serve as an integral part in completing and closing audits.

As an Examination Technician you will:
  • Locate, search, and document specific information to analyze taxpayers' records and financial data in order to spot trends and patterns.
  • Identify and report discrepancies and inconsistencies in case files and document the facts obtained.
  • Prepare, verify and assemble documentation that reflects the presentation of facts and the analysis performed. These may include, travel and entertainment, bad debt reserve, depreciation, source of income, ITC, balancing bank statements, chart of account and other expense schedules.
  • Reconcile subsidiary accounts with general ledger control accounts for receivables, payables, work-in-progress, inventory and property accounts.
  • Assist in the preparation of examination reports including the re-computation of tax liability, prepare and assemble work papers and exhibit in the case file.
  • As required, assists Revenue Agents in performing package audits to gather information concerning names and addresses, amounts paid and other information necessary.
  • Participate in determining which information is appropriate and at what point sufficient information has been gathered.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.

GS-05 LEVEL: You must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position includes experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. To be qualifying, your experience should be sufficient to demonstrate basic verification and computation techniques and methods, including skill in exercising accuracy with figures; Basic bookkeeping techniques to post various documents; and accomplishment in preparing and assembling work papers. Your experience should also demonstrate knowledge of basic tax law changes, data processing functions and examination programs, e.g., Tax Shelters.
OR
You may substitute education for specialized experience as follows: ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­A Bachelor's degree or four (4) years of education above high school in any field of study from an accredited college or university.

You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. Options for qualifying based on a combination will be identified in the online questions

The experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or Volunteer Service . One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis.
