Primary Function The Manager, Government Affairs is a shared policy resource across the Corporate Technology Center, North American Water Heating, Lochinvar, North American Water Treatment, and the Legal Department. Directly reporting to the Vice President of Government and Industry Affairs, the Manager will assist with the identification, creation, monitoring, communication, and execution of policy strategies that will both inform and advance the company's strategic business objectives primarily at the State and Local government level. The Manager will also provide support to the Senior Manager, Regulatory and Technical Affairs in advancing the Company's regulatory objectives in front of State and Local governmental bodies and non-governmental organizations. This position would ideally be located in Washington, yet we are open to considering Milwaukee, California or Nashville. Relocation assistance is available for highly qualified candidates. Travel up to 50% may be required. Responsibilities Assist in the identification, tracking, and analysis of, public policy and legislative developments that can impact the company with a primary focus on State and Local government and agencies. Advocate and Educate key State and Local elected officials regarding the company, its products, and public policy goals and objectives. Represent company on industry trade organization and non-governmental organization committees and working groups where applicable that focus on State and Local government policy making that may impact the business objectives of the company. Assist in the development, building, and maintaining a network of governmental, industry, and non-governmental organization policy relationships in North America. Assist in the growth, administration, and attend events of the A. O. Smith Political Action Committee. Qualifications Private sector and/or public sector position in which he/she provided analysis of proposed legislation and regulations affecting manufactured products, including standards, test procedures, and reporting/compliance obligations. This can include experience working within a regulatory agency, legislative body, industry association, or non-governmental organization. Sophisticated understanding of the legislative, regulatory, and administrative processes. Experience and relationships State and Local governmental policy making organizations. Experience working with non-governmental organizations in the energy-efficiency, buildings, energy storage, demand response program areas. Experience with Lobbying Disclosure/Reporting, as well as political action committees. Communication - Ability to write clearly, concisely and in a professional manner; listens effectively and clarifies information as needed; facilitates open exchange of ideas and fosters an atmosphere of open communication; eg, able to communicate technical issues to staff, management, and association members. Detail Oriented - Ability to pay attention to the minute details of a project or task. Teamwork - Ability to think and act independently but also work as a member of a larger team. Planning and organizing - ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work in order to meet deadlines. Relationship building - ability to build relationships internally and externally with elected and appointed office holders, staff, as well as industry associations, and non-governmental advocacy organizations.
