Technical Assistant, Film and Video Studies - Part-time

The George Mason University, Film and Video Studies Program within the College of Visual and Performing Arts seeks qualified candidates for the position of Technical Assistant. About the Position: The Technical Assistant is primarily an IT support position. In conjunction with the Technical Manager, the Technical Assistant will ensure that production and post production resources are available and in working order for student and faculty use, and help support faculty-led creative research involving production and post-production work. The Technical Assistant will help manage and maintain post production facilities, research and implement new IT requirements/policies, assist the technical execution of student showcases and other department events, and provide troubleshooting assistance to faculty and students. An ideal candidate will have experience providing end user IT support, have an interest in music and or film production, be able to learn new software quickly, have experience working with networks and network security, be an organized self-starter who can solve problems independently; be reliable, responsible, flexible, and creative. This candidate must be dedicated to cultivating a diverse and inclusive learning environment, and mentoring and advising members of underrepresented and underserved populations.

Responsibilities: Post Production Facilities: * With Technical Manager, ensure all computers in post-production facilities are maintained with up-to-date software and hardware in accordance with Industry best practices and department standards; * Work with ITS to ensure all Mason-owned computers are compliant with Mason ITS standards, and to report to the department when standards change; * Work with faculty to facilitate software requests and evaluate their compliance with Architectural Standards Review Board policies; * With Technical Manager, identify a network-based collaboration solution for Film @ Mason classrooms and labs, where students will be able to maintain temporary files, they are working on; * Diligently identify needs and areas of opportunity in growing and expanding post production facility capabilities and offerings.

Exhibitions and Events: * Help provide technical support for Film @ Mason exhibitions of student films as well as other programing and events sponsored by the department; * Technical support may include advance planning of technical needs for events, running projection for smaller screenings, setting up and taking down audio-video equipment, and coordinating student assistants to help record and otherwise document guest speakers.

Archive: * Help build and support departmental archive of student films. This includes ensuring that duplicate copies of all submissions exist on hard disk, in archival tape format, and in a cloud storage solution; * Build and maintain a searchable database for faculty research, CVPA development, and departmental showcases of student work; * Document and help establish departmental policy regarding the archive of student films; * Build and maintain archive of recorded Visiting Filmmakers Series events.

Website Administration: * Help manage and maintain program websites, and other online promotional platforms working with Associate Director. Academic and Program Manager, and Office and Exhibitions Coordinator, who will deliver necessary copy; * The website admin is responsible for ensuring website updates are posted in a timely fashion; * When significant updates are needed, the Technical Assistant will work with the CVPA website team to ensure changes are compliant with university standards and requirements.

Support Faculty-Led Creative Research: * Support faculty-led creative research as it involves students, program development, and/or university resources as directed.

Required Qualifications: * Relevant IT experience directly supporting end users in an enterprise or large business environment; * Must be able to provide advanced level support to MAC OS users; applicant should be able to erase a disk at the terminal level, transfer a system image from one machine to another, and troubleshoot network connectivity issues; * Must be able to learn unfamiliar software quickly.

Preferred Qualifications: * Bachelor's degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience, in related field; IT, Film or Music Production; * CompTIA A+ Certification, or similar; * At least one year's experience in dealing with live events/productions; * Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud software, Avid Pro Tools, Apple Logic, and other professional filmmaking, and music production software; * Understanding of basic principles of audio recording and mixing such as gain staging, EQ, and levels required for delivery; * Understanding of cybersecurity standards and protocols; * Experience in building relationships with vendors, and staying on top of changes in industry trends; * Experience budgeting, purchasing and implementing hardware and software solutions for clients and other end users.
