This position will report directly to the Superintendent and assist with managing a team of supervisors in a shop environment. The Assistant Superintendent will manage and direct a multi-disciplinary team of employees to deliver a complex portfolio of highly visible projects, conducts meetings and works to exceed stakeholder objectives for safety, customer service, and leadership. Ideal candidates would possess technical expertise in resolving complex maintenance issues. If you have successful management experience in coordinating multi-discipline maintenance activities, ability to supervise electrical/mechanical teams you are highly encouraged to apply and consider WMATA. Prior experience managing in a transit environment is preferred but not required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED)

  • A minimum of seven (7) years' experience in rail vehicle inspection and repair of electrical, air-conditioning and/or brake systems or related work, to include experience at the supervisory level

  • A valid motor vehicle operator's license from the jurisdiction of residence

  • In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.


The Assistant Superintendent, Car Inspection, assists with overseeing rail vehicle maintenance, inspection and management. The incumbent has responsibility for supervising the scheduling, periodic inspections, servicing, cleaning and minor repair of the rail transit car equipment. Assists in the development of preventive maintenance schedules, preparation of budget forecasts and other planning. The work is performed in accordance with manufacturers' recommended maintenance procedures and the Authority's general maintenance program.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures new rail equipment is properly inspected, cleaned and maintained. Supervises new rail transit vehicle inspections, acceptance and test programs. Prepares schedules and supervises the execution of car cleaning and washing programs. Reviews work schedules and makes assignments to supervisors. Prepares emergency work rosters and schedules.
  • Supervises the "road and running" repairs, and periodic inspections at Storage and Inspection (S&I) yards, and at other locations.
  • Implements training programs for new employees in inspection and servicing duties, and evaluates progress and performance. Enforces safety policies at S&I yards and other locations. Develops and advises on proper work methods and inspection procedures.
  • Establishes procedures to ensure equipment in service fully complies with safety requirements.
  • Assists in the development of inspection and preventive maintenance schedules for all transit vehicles.
  • Participates in the investigation of equipment failures/accidents involving rapid transit equipment.
  • Evaluates recommendations for the purchase of supplies, tools and equipment required in the preventive maintenance and inspection of rapid rail equipment.
  • Assists in the preparation of budgetary forecasts for inspection activities, staffing estimates and material requirements, including the need for new equipment. Analyzes labor report summaries and formulates time and performance standards.
  • Addresses complaints and grievances with employees or their representatives, attempting to resolve complaints in accordance with sound employee relations practices and operating requirements. Evaluates and discusses performance of personnel, recommending laudatory or disciplinary action as appropriate and equitable.
  • Represents the Superintendent at meetings, seminars and other functional responsibilities, as required. During absences, assumes the duties of the Superintendent, Car Inspection.
  • Works variable hours as required.
