Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay).

Position functions in Gastroenterology where you will be expected to provide coverage to treat, release, admit or transfer patients. Inpatient duties may require incumbent to be present during irregular and off-tours. Board certification Internal Medicine.

Responsibilities

Duties may include but not limited to:

Patient Care Responsibilities
Perform GI Endoscopic procedures in the Endoscopy Suite and/or Operating Room, as scheduled. Procedure notes are required to be written or dictated, as applicable. Proper documentation of workload including completion of consult requests, event capture, or encounter forms is required within the timelines specified by National, VISN, or facility guidelines.

Procedures to be performed include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Colonoscopy
  • Conscious Sedation
  • Endoscopic Control of Bleeding
  • Esopha al Dilation Endoscopic Pneumatic Dilators, Malloney Dilators, Et
  • Esophageal Varicus Band Ligation
  • Esophageal Varicus Injection Ligation
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy with Biopsy
  • Heaer Probe CoagulationI) Liver Biopsy
  • Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrotomy
  • Proctoscopy
  • Sigmoid-Flexible
Gastroenterologists are responsible for the evaluation of all new GI consults both inpatient and outpatient, with appropriate responses provided to the consulting party (including treatment plans, if applicable) within National, VISN, or facility guidelines.

Diagnosis and treatment within the scope of the Gastroenterological specialty are required. Telephonic contact is required in urgent/emergent situations.

Appropriate diagnosis and/or treatment may require contact with colleagues at VA or Non­ VA facilities.

The discussion of the treatment plan with patient and/or family members is required.

Participation in third call attending roster is required.

Resident, Student, and Fellow Education

Gastroenterologists will be expected to supervise any residents, students, fellows, or teams assigned to their areas of responsibility.

Each Gastroenterologist shall engage in furthering the education of medical residents, students, and fellows by provision of Grand Rounds presentations, noon lecture series presentation, etc., with an emphasis on development of the skills required to apply medical knowledge selectively based on individual cases and circumstances.

Research Responsibilities

Each Gastroenterologist is expected to promote and facilitate research amongst both House-staff and Faculty.

Other Significant Responsibilities

Participate in national VHA conference calls and audio conferences on issues related to the Gastroenterology Section, the Facility, and any new programs or initiatives affecting the two entities.

Participation will be assigned by the Chief, Gastroenterology Section; Chief, Medical Service; Chief of Staff or Director, Salem VAMC.

The Gastroenterologist will represent the Section or the Service by serving on committees or task forces, as well as with service to local, state, or national professional service organizations, both inside and outside of the VA (as applicable and assigned).

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Gastroenterologist reports directly to the Chief, Gastroenterology Section of the Salem VAMC Medical Service, for both administrative and clinical responsibilities.

CUSTOMER SERVICE

Relationships with management, co-workers, patients, and the general public are consistently courteous, respectful, and cooperative in nature.

Incumbent will display a cooperative attitude and will effectively work together to implement the organization's mission and goals.

Incumbent will ensure productivity is maintained at the established level for the program for which he/she is responsible.

AGE, DEVELOPMENTAL, AND CULTURAL NEEDS OF PATIENTS

The primary age of patients treated and cared for are normally at the mid-life or geriatric level, i.e. 40 years of age or older.

The position requires the incumbent to possess or develop an understanding of the particular needs of these types of patients.

Sensitivity to the special needs of all patients in respect to age, developmental requirements, and culturally related factors must be consistently achieved.

Takes into consideration age-related differences of the various veteran populations served:

Young adulthood (20-40) -- Persons in general have normal physical functions and lifestyles. Person establishes relationships with significant others and is competent to relate to others.

Middle age (40-65} -- Persons may have physical problems and may have changes in lifestyles because children have left home or change in occupation goals.

Older adulthood {65-75) -- Persons may be adapting to retirement and changing physical abilities. Chronic illness may also develop.

Middle old {75-85) -- Persons may be adapting to decline in speed of movement, reaction time, and sensory abilities. Also, persons may have increasing dependence on others.
Old {85 and over) -- Increasing physical problems may develop.

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Physical requirements outlined below.
Preferred Experience: Board Certified/Board Eligible in Gastroenterology.

Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-2 Physician Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office.

Physical requirement: The physician should be physically and mentally capable to perform the duties of the position including examinations, formulate the diagnosis and treatment plan and educate residents. Physical activities include sitting, standing (up to 4 hours) walking (up to 2 hours), heavy lifting (45 pounds or over), reaching above the shoulder, and repeated bending. The incumbent should be emotionally and mentally stable; and capable to perform the duties of the position.

Annual leave shall accrue for full-time physicians at the rate of eight (8) hours per biweekly pay period.
