Job Description

The assistant director of communications serves as an integral part of the Communications Team, assisting in supporting and overseeing the Office of Communications, including the management and oversight of Communications policies, processes, and staff. They also share responsibility with the executive director of communications for the management of the team's work to support the chief of school and community relations, and internal and external stakeholders including the Office of Community Partnerships and Engagement, the Office of Capital Programs, Planning and Design, Central Office departments, school administrators, ACPS families, and vendors.

This position reports to the executive director of communications.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in a job-related area required, with communications or public relations preferred. Bilingual ability is preferred.

Certificates & Licenses:APR accreditation is a plus.

Experience: Demonstrated expertise in managing communications production, including projects for video and web. Previous experience working in K-12 school communications preferred, with the ability to oversee services for live stream broadcasts, audio-visual equipment, and digital communications, as well as coordinate communications in support of community and family outreach. The ability to prioritize, work collaboratively and solve problems is a must.

Essential Functions
  • Support executive director of communications and chief of school and community relations
  • Help ensure best communications practices in providing information to ACPS staff and families, including those who are part of traditionally underserved communities
  • Manage yearly editorial calendar and work with the team to develop and implement communications activities that highlight division-wide and school-specific information
  • Oversee communications projects meeting from inception to conclusion to meet deadlines and goals
  • Serve as liaison to the community outreach and family engagement staff to support effective message delivery to all stakeholders, including hard-to-reach families
  • Ensure effective operations of education cable access channel and maintenance of television production equipment and supplies
  • Serve as liaison to a local cable television company and vendors for live broadcast needs, including captioning services
  • Coordinate audiovisual and other logistics for virtual and in-person events
  • Provide assistance in the development of communications products, including writing video scripts and other materials, and coordinating all elements of production
  • Serve as regular liaison for capital planning communications staff, assisting with developing communications plans and ensuring support of communications team in CIP work as needed
  • Provide support on communications needs related to web and digital media, and help ensure consistency of messaging across platforms
  • Supervise assigned personnel to ensure the department and individual performance objectives are met
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
