Minimum Qualifications :

Education
  • High School Diploma/GED

Experience

Job Summary/Duties:

The Train Operator Trainee will learn to operate and control trains that safely and efficiently transport customers throughout WMATA's underground, surface, and elevated rail system. Incumbent will learn and have a complete understanding of WMATA signal system and train operations, make announcements to customers; monitor train door operations; ensure that customers get on and off the train safely; and control the amount of time spent at each station in order to meet predetermined schedules and headways. Incumbent maintains alertness and constant awareness and uses good judgment to assure the safety of customers, employees and equipment. This trainee role will be under close supervision.

Essential Functions:

The Trainee will learn and demonstrate proficiency in performing the following:
  • Monitor all train operations in revenue and non-revenue service in accordance with the Metrorail Safety Rules and Procedures Handbook (MSRPH), Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and Special Orders. Operate trains in manual and automatic Train Operation and, when required, in Manual Operation, observing wayside signals and signs while monitoring the boarding and alighting of Metrorail customers.
  • Adhere to all issued schedules and headways, making pre-trip inspections of trains before entering mainline for revenue service. Provide customers with trip information by making Public Announcements at all station stops, informing them of the next station stop, transfer points, elevator outages and other pertinent information
  • Report all emergencies and unusual occurrences to Operations Central Control (OCC), following all emergency procedures within the MSRPH, SOP's and Special Orders. Provide frequent radio updates to OCC during emergencies and makes public announcements to customers.
  • Exercise prudent and good judgment under normal and emergency situations, while carrying out those duties necessary to ensure the safety of Metrorail customers, employees and equipment.
  • Report and troubleshoot minor train car related malfunctions on mainline in a timely manner, making adjustment to overcome problems and complete scheduled trips. Communicate effectively to ROCC, make written reports and give verbal reports to OCC, Division Managers and Supervisors.
  • Make train additions and cuts as directed by the Interlocking Operator or Terminal Supervisor. Report and troubleshoot minor car related malfunctions in the yard in a timely manner, making adjustment to overcome problems and complete yard moves to maintain trains consists needed for service.
  • Operate trains to dispatching tracks for revenue service, conduct train and yard inspections and, when instructed, operate trains and cars through yard car washes.
  • Make Mainline transports from yard to yard or yard to mainline, and give verbal and written reports to Interlocking Operators, Terminal Supervisors and management, as necessary.
