Summary

The Senior Database Administrator will be responsible for maintaining the integrity and performance of the Navy's Risk Management Information (RMI) and Air Force Safety Automated System (AFSAS) databases and guarantee the data is stored securely and efficiently. The Senior Database Administrator will also provide strategic guidance and implementation of the enterprise data warehouse and the corresponding data feeds. The Senior Database Administrator will facilitate creation of a replicated architecture, providing database tuning and monitoring database security, performance, and utilization.

Responsibilities
  • Must perform the process of database security in compliance with the Navy/Air Forces (AF) policy, provide physical model recommendations and provide escalation support for the production database.
  • Should be able to do capacity planning, create databases, and install software along with understanding the growth patterns of data to plan for future storage requirements.
  • Evaluate and apply patches, upgrade point release database software, and perform backups.
  • Set up and manage high-availability systems that can meet steep Recovery Point Objective (RPO) and Recovery Time Objective (RTO) SLAs.
  • Control access to the database, help application teams draft and apply changes to database structures, and perform reactive and proactive performance tuning.
  • Work in coordination with developers, DBAs, and other technical teams to meet the needs and specifications of the project and document all the procedures in a concise manner.
  • Prioritize work based on the project needs and work effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Support the tactical and strategic directions for Navy/AFs database infrastructure.
  • Provide routine status reports to leadership and escalate as necessary.
  • Maintain service levels and department goals for problem resolution.
  • Follow security stands and effectively manage software patches and upgrades.
  • Mentor junior team members and share knowledge within the team.
  • Ability to lead projects independently and working closely with the rest of the team members.
  • Adopt to change technology environment and embrace newer platforms to support.
  • Work in an agile environment and engage in DevOps practices.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology or a related field
  • Must have experience with SQL development and tuning and SQL server replication (transactional, snapshot, SQL, and Oracle target)
  • Must have experience in Oracle-RDS
  • Must have data migration and webservices experience
  • OLTP performance troubleshooting (all RDBMS' listed above)
  • RDBMS installation and configuration (all RDBMS' listed above)
  • RDBMS upgrade/patching (all RDBMS' listed above)
  • Secret clearance required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • 5-8 years of experience in data integration/data movement/database administration is preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to produce quality work on tight schedules as part of a large team of senior DBAs
  • Willingness to work on site in a business professional environment, except for after hour and on call activities.
  • Ability to design schema, access patterns, locking strategy, SQL development, and tuning.
  • Ability to modify the database structure.
  • Ability to optimize application and end-user queries (reactive tuning).
  • Ability to archive data.
  • Ability to generate needed ad hoc reports by querying from the database.
  • Ability to perform proactive performance tuning.
  • Ability to enroll users and maintain system security.
  • Ability to control user access to the database.
  • Ability to lock down host access.
  • Ability to secure database privileged credentials (SYSDBA or SYSTEM for Oracle and sa for SQL Server).
  • Ability to perform parameter configuration and tuning.
  • Ability to perform cache management.
  • Ability to perform job scheduling.
  • Ability to monitor performance metrics, response times, request rates, alerting, and object access and logs.
  • Ability to ensure compliance with database vendor license agreement.
  • Ability to design and implement disaster recovery (DR) solutions.
  • Ability to allocate system storage and plan future storage requirements for the database system.
  • Ability to install and upgrade the database software.
  • Ability to perform data backups.
  • Ability to create, manage, and monitor high-availability (HA) systems.
  • Ability to patch the software that powers your database.
  • Ability to troubleshoot DB errors and potentially contact vendors for technical support.
