Vice President, Architecture, Commercial Technology

THE POSITION

Capital One is seeking a Vice President, Architecture for its Commercial Technology organization. As the Vice President, Architecture for Commercial Tech, you will be a hands-on, forward-looking leader providing technical vision and championing innovation, resiliency, and consistency of solutions across a diverse technology landscape. You will help transform the Commercial bank and you will play a lead role in the development and evolution of our technology strategy, which requires continuously scanning the technology horizon, leading and driving next generation architecture activities involving technologies important to the future of the Commercial Bank, and you will serve as a change agent across the enterprise. You will oversee the development of the architecture strategy and technology standards, and enable technology evaluation and transfer, ensuring appropriate lean governance. This includes directing resolution of difficult technical issues as they arise, proactive identification of challenges and their impacts, and driving effective implementation of architecture frameworks for future project needs.

ABOUT COMMERCIAL TECH

Commercial Tech is a unique department within Capital One; we're situated within the Tech Line of Business but work closely with the Commercial Bank to build and maintain the digital platforms that our customers need. Capital One's Commercial Bank is a top 10 U.S. bank, servicing an $80 billion loan portfolio accounting for ⅓ of Capital One's outstanding loans by cultivating close relationships with more than 6,100 business clients to generate close to $3 billion in annual revenue.

Commercial Tech is a relatively nimble organization within Capital One, employing about 700 associates. Our size contributes to our close-knit culture and enables us to connect with leadership and easily collaborate, rolling out Tech that's used across the Enterprise.

The Architecture team within Commercial Tech is a diverse, balanced, and fearless team of designers, product managers, engineers, and strategists. These talented performers embed themselves within the Commercial Bank value streams to ensure technical solutions are fit for purpose by tying them back to architectural principles across Commercial Tech and Capital One. The teams work to build cohesive customer and associate applications across the Commercial Bank while constantly evolving software to meet business requirements.

QUALIFICATIONS & CORE RESPONSIBILITIES:

To be successful, you must have the ability to work effectively at multiple levels, ranging from diving into the details with senior engineers, white boarding high-level designs with our engineering staff, and effectively communicating with our senior executives and stakeholders. You need to be comfortable and effective at communicating in many venues and formats and advancing an agenda through personal credibility and influence. You will partner with other Technology executives to actively foster a high energy, highly productive engineering organization and culture across Capital One. The ability to be highly influential in a matrix environment is critical to success.
  • Lead all architecture functions for Commercial Tech's portfolio, including touchpoints that interact with Enterprise Architecture
  • Lead the design and architecture of Commercial Tech, heavily leaning on pattern design and effectiveness
  • Define and implement the future of Capital One's Commercial Bank architecture, including embracing a cloud-native microservice architecture and applying them to both existing and new workloads
  • Influence the Commercial Tech organization toward maturating its engineering practices
  • Serve as a beacon Technology leader inside Capital One and a role model for software engineers across the Enterprise


THE PERSON

The successful candidate will be a seasoned technology professional with significant architecture and engineering experience. This individual has the capacity to exert influence at the local and enterprise level, lead experts, and possesses the qualities of a highly-skilled technologist; one who approaches problem-solving with a true engineering mindset. The ideal candidate believes that architecture is a strategic role that will enable the business objectives. This person feels at home in the cloud and is an expert in designing cloud-native solutions. This individual will have the ability to identify and cultivate solutions to complex technical problems. S/he takes a critical lens to buy vs. build decisions and is not afraid of implementing custom-built or open-source solutions alongside traditional vendor products.

  • Leadership skills marked by poise, positive influence, and the ability to drive change


TECHNICAL/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience driving architecture and engineering excellence at enterprise scale
  • Depth across architecture, web development, DevOps technologies, open-source integrations, and various software design architectural patterns
  • Superior technical proficiency; well versed in open source technologies and SaaS/Cloud-based application services


BASIC QUALIFICAITONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 12+ years' experience in Software Engineering or Architecture roles
  • 5+ years' experience in technology leadership or management roles


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Master's degree or MBA
  • At least 15 years' experience in Software Engineering or Architecture roles
  • At least 7 years' experience in technology leadership or management roles
