Senior Legal Specialist - Card Legal

The Legal Department's Legal Loss Mitigation Team (Card Legal) is seeking a Senior Legal Specialist to assist in managing credit card debt collection litigation within Capital One. This role will involve interaction with internal business associates and with internal and external legal counsel.

Job responsibilities will include:
  • Researching, analyzing, and developing subject matter expertise of state and federal laws and regulations that impact the business
  • Managing interactions with external counsel and performing necessary research to respond to and/or appropriately escalate complaints, counterclaims, discovery requests, disputes and fraud claims
  • Independently gathering internal documents and information relevant to litigation matters and law firms
  • Maintaining litigation case files, including those involving pleadings and discovery
  • Supporting internal and external legal counsel in identifying relevant account information and developing litigation strategies
  • Working with internal legal counsel and/or business clients to improve existing business practices and procedures
  • Managing multiple high priority, deadline driven tasks independently


The successful candidate will have:
  • Experience with an in-house legal department or law firm, with preference to a background in collections, consumer finance or financial services litigation
  • Knowledge of consumer finance laws, collection laws, and regulations
  • Strong problem solving and decision-making skills
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical skills and sound judgment
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office
  • Solid ability to learn and navigate multiple platforms in support of matter management and investigations


Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent certification
  • At least 3 years of experience in a corporate legal department or a law firm


Preferred Qualifications:
  • College degree or military experience
  • 1+ years of experience managing external legal counsel
  • 1+ years of experience in collections, consumer finance or financial services litigation
  • Knowledge of consumer finance laws, collection laws, and regulations
  • Project management experience
