Resident Services Coordinator (Education)

Arlington, VA

The general purpose of resident services is to offer programs that will improve the quality of life at AHC properties and strengthen the neighborhoods where AHC properties are located. Resident Services offers programs for all age groups but focuses primarily on children and teens. After-school and summer programs for youth comprise the largest part of Resident Services programming. Workshops, classes and field trips are offered during the year for adults and senior citizens.

The Resident Services Coordinator is responsible for assisting the Resident Services Manager in the implementation of programs for residents in multifamily apartment communities in Arlington. His/her responsibilities include coordinating and implementing educational programs for children, youth and adults, and community-building activities for all residents. Programs are offered on-site in designated community spaces. The principle strategies for implementing programs involve direct outreach to residents, management of on-site programs, supervision and retention of volunteers and maintenance of community equipment and resources.

Responsibilities include:

1. Plan and Implement Programs: Plan and lead educational and recreational activities for children and youth, including after-school activities for elementary school students, a teen program that involves tutoring, workshops, and field trips for middle and high school students, and a college prep and career readiness program to prepare 11th and 12th graders for life after graduation. Programs are designed to foster students’ academic success, with a special emphasis on teaching basic skills like reading and organization, and to help them develop essential life skills.

2. Supervising Volunteers: Coordinate and supervise volunteers to work as tutors/mentors and to help meet other community needs. Support volunteers by providing curricula, when appropriate, and other necessary program materials.

3. Collect and Manage Data to Meet Grant Requirements: Use systems to collect data on how the center is being used and by whom. Compile and enter relevant data in online data base. Assist with the development of ideas for new grant projects and provide qualitative anecdotes to support grant reports.

4. Maintaining Community Spaces and Equipment: Ensure that groups using the community room and computer center clean up after each activity and take care of the equipment in each room. Update the bulletin boards and community calendar at each site. Maintain computer equipment by coordinating technical support for adjustments and repairs, as necessary, and upgrades, as possible.

5. Partnerships: Maintain contact with Arlington Public Schools teachers and counseling staff, Arlington County Community Outreach Program, Arlington Education and Employment Program, and other community partners that aid in the implementation of the center programs.

6. Providing Information and Referrals to Residents: Use resources available to gather information to help residents address their social service and educational needs through programs and agencies available in the larger community. Assist residents in completing forms and applications and help them make linkages to appropriate agencies.
