Responsibilities

  • Serve as a recognized expert in Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM) for the Occupational Medicine Branch of the Occupational and Environmental Health Division within the Public Health Directorate of the DHA.
  • Direct the preparation of and maintains status reports of progress toward meeting OM program objectives.
  • Utilize knowledge of science, and program management to develop solutions to occupational health issues facing the OM Branch.
  • Integrate data associated with occupational health activities for analysis of historical exposures and forecasting future OEH-related issues.
  • Perform staff coordination of OEH issues within the DHA, the DoD Secretariats, other federal agencies, and the Uniformed military Services.
  • Participate in DoD public health incident response/consequence management teams.
  • Assist in coordinating integrating MHS OEH functions across DHA directorates, and among Military Department Surgeon General offices.
  • Determine program emphasis and communicates agency policies and priorities throughout the organization.
  • Conduct workshops and other professional training in occupational health.
  • Develop comprehensive written reports, graphics, charts, and oral presentations to clearly and concisely illustrate the results of analysis to senior leaders.

Requirements

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • Must have a permanent, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine as a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) in a State, District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
  • Must have a current certification from the American Board of Preventive Medicine in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Preferred to have active membership as a Fellow in the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine (ACOEM).
  • Must have a minimum of ten years of practice as an Occupational and Environmental Medicine physician.
  • Must have five years of progressive experience in the administration/operation of Occupational Health Services or the equivalent (such as quality management, performance improvement, patient safety, and managed care).
  • Must be eligible for full credentials to provide occupational health services to eligible beneficiaries.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position is a Testing Designated Position subject to applicant testing and random drug testing. Selectees will be required to sign DA Form 5019 requiring participation in random drug urinalysis testing.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Basic Requirement for Physician (Occupational Medicine):

Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association; Association of American Medical Colleges; Liaison Committee on Medical Education; Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts and/or evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States through permanent certification by the ECFMG, a fifth pathway certificate, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination).

OR

Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must have provided education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts and/or evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States through permanent certification by the ECFMG, a fifth pathway certificate, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination).

AND

Licensure: Applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. (Note: You must attach a copy of your license.)

AND

Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below.

An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association, (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Experience/Training: Applicants must possess 5 years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled (Occupational Medicine) or equivalent experience and training. Applicants must have a current certification from the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) in Occupational and Environmental Medicine (OEM). Applicant must have a minimum of ten years of practice as an Occupational and Environmental Medicine physician and five years of progressive experience in the administration/operation of Occupational Health Services or the equivalent (such as quality management, performance improvement, patient safety, and managed care).

Education

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
