Job Announcement

Serves as the Docket Clerk in the Docketing Section of the Fairfax Circuit Court. Maintains dockets of cases, by updating pertinent information including date and time of the hearing/trial/court appearances, parties involved, the courtroom, and presiding Judge. Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assists the Chief Judge in preparing the docket assignments, by providing accurate and up-to-date docket information.
  • Reviews documents, inputs data into Court database, arranges for interpreters and audio-visual equipment for the courtroom, and prepares court orders.
  • Determines what case files are needed for the docket and ensures they are available and complete for trial.
  • Interacts with attorneys, law clerks, judges, and the public to obtain information necessary to docket cases.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of the Code of Virginia relating to legal procedures pertaining to docketing a court case.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Knowledge of standard administrative procedures, practices, and equipment;
  • Knowledge of common legal terminology, documents and procedures;
  • Ability of comprehend applicable Virginia Code sections and laws;
  • Ability to process a considerable volume of record work in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Ability to perform data entry, scanning, indexing and retrieval with computer information systems;
  • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively, both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of individuals, including the judges, general public, members of the legal and business community, and department staff.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation; plus two years of experience providing administrative support, technical support, customer service, or working in a court or legal environment.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Not applicable.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Two or more years of experience in providing front-line customer services.
  • Experience working in a court or legal environment.
  • Knowledge of the Code of Virginia and regulations in relevant areas.
  • Demonstrated data entry experience.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience working in a team environment.
  • Ability to exercise tact, discretion, initiative, creativity, and independent judgment.
  • Experience in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (i.e., Word, Excel, and Outlook).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The positions within this class are subject to criminal background checks as a condition of hiring and periodically thereafter. An applicant or employee will be required to submit a request for a criminal history record check to the appropriate agency.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Duties are generally sedentary. Ability to lift boxes, file and push a cart weighing up to 30 pounds. Ability to input and retrieve data from a computer. Ability to type at least 30 words per minute due to high volume of computer entries. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
