Our ideal candidate shall have hands on experience in traction power system operation, control and maintenance. Experience in evaluating the performance of traction power system equipment, investigate incidents to determine the nature and cause of problems that occur during operation and recommends corrective actions or special procedures that will reduce or eliminate future failures and prepare incident reports. The candidate will be required to work at night or different shifts to support operation.

Minimum Qualifications:

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or a related field. A minimum of six (6) years of extensive, progressively responsible experience in the design, installation, operation and maintenance of power systems, including experience in organizing and managing rail transit traction power system projects/programs.

Or, a combination of post high school education and more than eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the design, installation, operation, and maintenance of power systems, including experience in organizing and managing rail transit traction power system projects/programs.


Registration as a Professional Engineer or the ability to obtain a PE license within two (2) years, in Maryland, Virginia or the District of Columbia.

Job Summary/Duties:

This is a professional engineering and project management position in the highly specialized field of mass transit electrical power systems with extensive latitude for independent judgment and approval authority for power systems activities.

The position is responsible for implementing broadly stated policies and performance objectives into procedures, instructions, programs, projects, systems, equipment and software to ensure design integrity, safety, configuration control, reliability and maintenance of power systems.

The position performs a full range of engineering tasks including direction of maintenance, construction and test personnel, contractors, and consultants.

Reviews and evaluates the performance and maintenance of power systems.

Identifies opportunities to improve safety, reliability and cost efficiency of systems through hazard and failure trends. Develops, approves and implements test plans, corrective actions, procedural or engineering modifications, new procedures or capital programs.

Provides effective preventive maintenance procedures. Annually reviews preventive maintenance procedures and modifies procedures or frequencies when necessary.

Investigates safety-related incidents. Develops analyses, reports and recommendations to prevent recurrence. Implements safe working practices and technical modifications to prevent or reduce hazards.

Manages power programs, oversees project execution, approves contractor transmittals, verifies work completion, reviews invoices and authorizes payment.

Participates in Substantial Completion Inspections and accepts work on the behalf of the Department of Operations.

Provides technical and administrative direction for power system activities. Performs design engineering for replacement and rehabilitation of electrical power systems.

Develops standards for training and skill levels required of maintenance personnel.

Maintains systems configuration and provides technical documents to maintenance personnel, consultants and contractors.

Inspects manufacturing facilities, witnesses power equipment design and production tests. Analyzes and approves equipment inspection and test reports prior to shipment.

Manages the Authority's Stray Current / Corrosion Abatement Program to minimize corrosion of the Authority's infrastructure and utility-owned water and gas lines.

Remains abreast of industry standards and improved technologies through workshops, professional contacts/organizations and advanced educational course work.

Performs related duties as assigned.
