Policy, Research and International Affairs (PRI) serves AARP by leading the development and articulation of AARP's public policies, research and insights on the 50+ and issues that matter to them, importing best global practices, and strengthening AARP's reputation for world class expertise and thought leadership.


Part of AARP's Policy, Research and International Affairs ("PRI") group, the AARP Thought Leadership team works across the enterprise to position AARP as a global leader and engages with provocative thinkers to bring in the best ideas and solutions from a wide range of perspectives.

The Senior Policy Advisor of Thought Leadership, Longevity Economy will play a critical role in positioning AARP as the leading authority on the economic value of the 50 + population and the opportunity to create age inclusive societies by highlighting the costs of inaction if society does not address all forms of discrimination. This role will serve a critical role in advancing AARP's leadership in understanding the potential size, scope, and wide-reaching influence of the 50+ market as we build towards an equitable future where people live longer, healthier lives.

The Senior Policy Advisor will:
  • Lead and execute a thought leadership portfolio with a focus on the longevity economy and how inequities impacts longevity, markets and solutions to empower people to choose how they live as they age.
  • Conceptualize and design research projects and economic impact analysis with external vendors, including the management and supervision of contracts.
  • Write and publish content (reports, blog posts, social media, videos) for internal and external audiences, including industry leaders and influencers. For all written reports, oversee internal and external peer review, quality control and document production. Manages the RFP process, the contractual scope of work, and all relevant budget activities for contracted research products.
  • Provide expert guidance and economic analysis on the longevity economy to members of the policy community, media, other researchers, and AARP staff across the enterprise.
  • Advise SVP and other senior leadership on global economic trends and issues that could affect how countries see, value and leverage their aging population.
  • Develop and cultivate rapport and credibility with external thought leaders, industry leaders and provocative thinkers from a wide range of perspectives around the globe to bring best ideas to AARP.
  • Define and implement a future facing thought leadership approach across the enterprise by leveraging and integrating the full range of insights, knowledge and expertise to showcase AARP's overall thought leadership and vision for an inclusive and equitable longevity economy.
  • Work collaboratively with the International team to develop and implement strategies to promote the consideration of global aging in the policies and programs of major global financial institutions.
  • Use imagination and creativity to connect external opportunities with internal functions, navigating and mapping out paths to success.
  • Inspire and cultivate strong relationships with internal colleagues to ensure the best opportunities are explored and realized.
  • Completion of a Master's or advanced degree in Economics, Finance, Public Policy, Business, Mathematics, Political Science, or a related field and 10+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of related training and relevant experience. (PhD preferred).
  • Demonstrated ability to forge effective internal and external partnerships across groups and departments.
  • Fluent in the use of data and metrics to explain current trends global economics, with an emphasis of understanding on how market segments and demographics can influence macro-trends.
  • Excellent analytical, communication and leadership skills.
  • Proven ability to quickly understand and interpret strategic issues and directions.
  • Ability to collect and analyze information and to edit, write and speak clearly and persuasively.
  • Excellent interpersonal and influence skills to work collaboratively with a variety of personalities and styles.
  • Excellent verbal and written presentation skills, with the ability to convey the most important points simply and visually. Familiarity with emerging tools for data visualization strongly desired.
  • Experience managing long-term projects that require meticulous project management or other service-related support and resources.
  • Strong understanding of national and international economic trends and drivers.
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of management.
  • Demonstrated diplomatic, networking, and delegation skills.
  • Technical proficiency in MS office. Design skills a plus.
