Summary

Incumbent performs assignments in support of statistical research studies which are focused on the causes, incidence and cost of accidents, disease and disabling illness. Assignments, which may either cover recurring or continuing studies or relate to special investigations, are characteristically clearly defined units or parts of major projects assigned higher-graded statisticians.

Responsibilities

As a Statistician (Health) (Direct Hire), you will:
  • Develop specifications for and monitors data tabulations ensuring accuracy and quality of data. Develop the analytical plan incorporating appropriate statistical methods and techniques, executes the analysis of data, and interprets results.
  • Be responsible for ensuring the statistical validity of study activities by solving problems occurring in the data collection process or analysis of data.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports of study results and disseminates results of research projects in a wide range of venues including publications, peer reviewed journals, summaries, manuscripts, and special reports.
  • Develop and implements methods and procedures for the collection, processing, editing and analysis of data.
  • Provide technical leadership, consultation, and advice on statistical analysis and methods, and techniques of assigned studies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: A. Applicants must have successfully completed a full four-year course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree that includes 15 semester hours in statistics (or in math and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical/biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc.
OR
B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as described in "A" above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance. In addition to meeting the basic qualifications requirement, applicants must meet the specialized experience as stated below.

Minimum Qualifications GS-11:
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience assisting in the implementation of data collection systems; producing and documenting analytic data files; and/or conducting basic statistical analyses of population, clinical, health, or administrative data.
OR
Have completed 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
OR
Have a combination of graduate level education and experience that meets 100% of the qualification requirements for this position.

Minimum Qualifications GS-12:
Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include experience planning and conducting data collections such as surveys; planning, producing and documenting analytic data files; conducting data quality evaluations and documenting the results of these evaluations; and/or designing and conducting statistical analyses of population, clinical, health, or administrative data related to health topics for publication.

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements.
