As an Industrial Hygienist, you will serve as the principle advisor and subject matter expert on all industrial hygiene issues at National Park Service.

Responsibilities

  • Provide guidance to Park superintendents, managers, and occupational safety and health personnel on related policies and regulations
  • Develop safety and health management systems, processes, guidelines and services
  • Develop and evaluate work plans for industrial hygiene monitoring and assessments
  • Evaluate contractor proposals or technical documents and monitor contractor work for compliance with standards and policies
  • Monitor safety management systems throughout Park Service regions
  • Provide guidance to Serious Accident Investigation teams and develop and review injury and property damage reports
  • Develop and deliver training on a variety of industrial hygiene topics

Qualifications

In order to be qualified for this position, you must meet the basic requirement in one of the following ways:
A. Possess a bachelor's or higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science. - OR -
B. Possess a bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene. - OR -
C. Possess certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene.

(Please note: All science or engineering courses offered in fulfillment of the above requirements must be acceptable for credit toward the completion of a standard 4-year professional curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in science or engineering at an accredited college or university. For engineering degrees to be acceptable, the curriculum must be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) as a professional engineering curriculum.)

In addition, all applicants must possess one year of specialized experience, equivalent to the GS-12 level in the Federal service, leading the collection and analysis of data, including developing new sampling or control methods, in order to determine the impact or probability of exposure to a variety of chemical, physical, and biological stresses in the workplace; providing advice to personnel on industrial hygiene policies, practices, and strategies; and developing or recommending appropriate methods to control or mitigate workplace safety hazards.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week. Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".
