Job Description

The part-time communications specialist position provides support to the communications team, school division and schools within ACPS to deliver clear and concise messaging for internal and external audiences, in alignment with the ACPS' strategic plan. Assignments are received through the executive director of communications, meetings, and written requests, affording latitude for independent judgment and action in the performance of duties. This position also supports special projects driven by the Communications Team.

This role requires meeting tight deadlines, high-quality writing skills, and a can-do attitude. This role involves proactive coordination with members of the communications team and staff in other departments to gather information necessary for writing projects and ensure the incorporation of review and edits before documents are finalized. Experience writing messaging, talking points, and content for web pages and newsletters preferred.

Work is performed under general supervision and involves the ability to use sound judgment and work collaboratively as part of the Communications Team, as well as knowledge of the school division's organization and commitment to equity for all.

This position reports to the executive director of communications.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor's degree in journalism/English/public relations/ mass communications or a related field.

Experience: Two years of training and experience in public education or public relations preferred. Writing experience is essential.
  • Knowledge of public education and experience in communications.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, and judgment skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills;
  • Strong research skills and ability to produce clear, accurate, and innovative writing and materials.
  • Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with staff from schools and central office, meet tight deadlines, and solve problems.

Essential Functions
  • Provide communications support to the division, schools, and communications team.
  • Identify, research, write, review, and edit various forms of communications for internal and external audiences that align with the ACPS mission and values as assigned.
  • Develop messaging, talking points, op-eds, speeches, newsletters, parent and community letters, video scripts, social media posts, templates for school use, and more, as assigned.
  • Disseminate information to the public and school district staff.
  • Provide communications support for community meetings and other division events as required.
  • Serve as writer/editor for division's website projects and help ensure website information is kept up to date.
  • Tailor communications appropriately for target audiences, and formulates content to meet ACPS style, formatting and brand guidelines.
  • Conduct research and interviews, and solicit feedback through formal and informal means on activities, products and purposes of the public relations program and the school division in general.
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
  • Supports the communications team in meeting all goals and implementation tasks, and may perform other additional duties or tasks as designated by the supervisor.

Please note: This is a part-time position eligible for part-time benefits.
