Job Details
As a member of the Department for Safety and Environmental Management (SAFE) Investigations Team, you will support the implementation of the Metro Safety Management System by leading detailed investigations of incidents, accidents and near-miss events.
This role leads on-scene fact-finding and detailed human factors inquiries. The investigator develops comprehensive reports detailing factual findings and analyses to determine causal factors of incidents. The ideal candidate possesses subject matter expertise in performing root cause analysis and developing robust corrective action plans that effectively mitigate the risk of the same or similar incidents from reoccurring. Excellent written and oral communication skills, as well as critical thinking skills, are considered essential.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Safety Management, Accident Investigation, or related field
- In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an Associate's Degree in Engineering, Safety Management, Accident Investigation, or related field and two (2) years of experience in accident investigation activities
Experience
- Minimum seven (7) years of direct experience in accident investigation activities
Certification/Licensure
- Possession of a valid Driver's License
- Required to attend and successfully pass RWP training within 30 days of hire and to maintain RWP Qualification as a condition to perform core job duties.
Preferred
- Master's Degree in Engineering, Safety Management, Accident Investigation, or related field
- Transit Safety and Security Program (TSSP) Certificate designation from the Transportation Safety Institute
- Certified Safety Specialist or Certified Safety & Security Director designation from the World Safety Organization

- In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.
Job Summary/Duties:
The Transit Safety Investigator supports the implementation of the Metro Safety Management System by leading detailed investigations of incidents, accidents and near-miss events. This role leads on-scene fact-finding and detailed human factors inquiries. The investigator develops comprehensive reports detailing factual findings and analyses to determine causal factors of incidents. Possesses subject matter expertise in performing root cause analysis and developing robust corrective action plans that effectively mitigate the risk of the same or similar incidents from re occurring. Demonstrated proficiency in producing detailed investigation reports as well as presentations that meet or exceed internal (board and executive) and external (regulatory) requirements is required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Conducts detailed investigations of accidents and incidents including but not limited to derailments, collisions, and pedestrian incidents. May also include employee, contractor and near-miss incidents. Reviews and interprets data from multiple systems of record and conducts interviews with involved staff and responders
- Applies subject matter expertise to perform root cause analysis and develop robust corrective action plans that effectively mitigate the risk of the same or similar incidents from re occurring
- Develops comprehensive incident reports addressing all aspects of findings including, but not limited to training, operations and maintenance protocols, and regulatory compliance activities
- Prepares detailed investigation reports as well as presentations that meet or exceed internal (board and executive) and external (regulatory) requirements
- Works with WMATA State Safety Oversight Agency (SSOA) to review and edit reports in accordance with regulatory reporting requirements
