Summary

Serves as an engineering technician for Langley Research Center (LaRC), Hampton, VA. Performs fabrication, installation, modification, repairs, and maintenance of equipment, components, and facilities. Perform preventive and corrective maintenance, inspect and analyze physical conditions of equipment, components and facilities to ensure it is in reliable, operational condition.

Responsibilities

  • Perform non-professional technical duties related to operational support, modification, updating, testing, checkout, and design of complete systems, or parts of systems.

  • Plan, develop, and construct modifications and upgrades to components; Documents, studies and analyzes all observed characteristics of items under test; Explores unusual or arcane sources of information.
  • Document, study and analyze all observed characteristics of facilities, technology or equipment.
  • Participate in the development of test plans, documents test processes/procedures, evaluates test results and makes necessary design adjustments to achieve desired results.
  • Design and develop experimental research instruments, devices, system components or facilities for Project.
  • Design and document novel test procedures and evaluate test results and makes necessary design adjustments to achieve an operational facility.
  • Prepare engineering evaluation tests of equipment such as prototypes of experimental hardware conceived and designed by engineers.
  • Consider test parameters established by the project engineer, requirements to be met, adequacy of facilities, availability of instrumentation, safety issues involved, and time available.
  • Collaborate with project engineers to determine the methods and techniques that will yield valid test results and establishes procedures and sequences necessary to conduct tests.

Qualifications

You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the Federal service that includes experience such as; integrating systems associated with structures and materials research facilities such as; the ability to program, operate and troubleshoot data acquisition and control systems, hydraulic systems, pneumatics, vacuum systems, cryogenic and elevated temperature systems; experience operating and troubleshooting closed-loop servo controlled hydraulic test equipment, and optical measurement systems.
