Duties

Summary

You will serves as a Technical Specialist in the Metals Applications Technology Branch (MATB) within the Engineering Directorate at the Langley Research Center. MATB provides advanced machining technologies enabling the development of research-oriented hardware for NASA's aeronautics, space exploration, and scientific programs.

Responsibilities

  • Adheres to established fabrication policies and procedures; and full compliance with the provisions of applicable safety regulations.
  • Develops and implements practical processes for the machining and use of new technology in research and development projects.
  • Provides technical and administrative support for enabling the development and fabrication of mission-critical space flight hardware for dynamic high-impact projects.
  • Provides technical, mechanical and operational support for modifications, tests, or repair of existing equipment, components, related systems, and special equipment.
  • Provides the resources for conventional and computer-aided manufacture, including computer-aided design interaction and provides direct support of engineers and research scientists relative to the design and development of major projects.
  • Utilizes complex manufacturing equipment/systems and facilities precision machining of high-reliability/high-quality research hardware both in-house and contracted for the aerospace and scientific programs.

Qualifications

To qualify for GS-09, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-08 level in the Federal service that includes working with advanced concepts, principles, and practices in the field of fabrication technology, metallic test article and space flight hardware machining/assembly, including the mechanical design processes, additive manufacturing, metals fabrication, composites, and thermal processing; and visualizing and geometrically describing piece parts, of varying complexities, through use of sketches, engineering drawings and/or computer-aided design.
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a master's degree or equivalent graduate degree in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
c) Completed at least 2 full academic years of graduate education in engineering, engineering technology, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, surveying, physical science, or mathematics.
OR
d) An equivalent combination of experience and graduate education
