Job Announcement

Works as part of the award winning Fairfax County GIS office in the GIS & Mapping Services Division Geospatial Data Services Branch. Splits time between a variety of different duties but will be primarily focused on data. Creates and maintains basemap layers that are used by nearly every agency in Fairfax County. These layers include property, zoning, easements, road centerlines, and addresses within the enterprise GIS database. This also includes performing quality assurance of the basemap layers and creation and maintenance of metadata for the layers in the GIS database. Performs basic spatial analysis and works with higher level GIS Analysts on projects to develop and implement GIS solutions for agencies within the county. Also, fulfilling requests for GIS special projects including creating maps, developing reports, and creating spatial layers to support the development of maps and reports. This may require implementing solutions of web based map products using ArcGIS Online/ArcGIS Enterprise or other web GIS software. Develops and leads technical training classes on a variety of topics to county staff on a regular basis. Provides support to the general public as needed responding to digital and phone inquiries for information and services as well as handling help call requests from county staff on the use of GIS software.

Employment Standards

Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a bachelor's degree in computer science, geography or related field; plus course work in ArcView GIS or similar GIS software.

The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

Two years of hands on GIS/CAD editing experience and basic GIS analysis, preferably within a large multi-user enterprise geographic information system. Experience with ArcGIS 10.x and/or ArcGIS Pro 2.x software and its editing and mapping environments. Able to interpret and translate data from aerial photography, land records, deed descriptions, and field data. Experience with web based mapping applications such as ArcGIS Online. Excellent cartographic skills. Excellent organizational skills. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work well with others in a team environment.

Work is generally sedentary, performed in a normal office environment. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
