Responsibilities

  • You will gradually gain trade knowledge and proficiency requiring increasing knowledge and more progressively technical assignments.
  • You will, as a Sheet Metal Mechanic (3806): Cut and remove damaged areas of aircraft, parts and assemblies, fabricate and install patches to repair aircraft parts and components.
  • You will, as a Aircraft Mechanic (8852): Disassemble and assemble aircraft equipment install, test, modify, overhaul, and repair assemblies and sub-assemblies.

  • Must be 18 years of age by the start of employment date as Department of Labor Child Labor laws do not allow employment for those under age 18 in hazardous, industrial areas.
  • Selectee will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • Work requires considerable walking, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, standing, climbing, bending, stretching, pulling, and working in cramped and awkward positions for long periods of time.
  • Must be required to successfully complete a 2-year probationary period.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or pass the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

PLACEMENT TEST INFORMATION:

Applicants must take the Virginia Placement Test (VPT) at Tidewater Community College and the results must be attached prior to announcement closing date.

For your application package to be complete college placement test must be attached by the closing date (05/08/2021). The placement test is the responsibility of the applicant.

FRC MID Atlantic does not schedule placement test. If using a previous placement test, the test must have been taken within the past year as of 05/08/2020 or it must be retaken.

This position is located at Fleet Readiness Center, Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia. This program is a 4-year combination work/study program

PLEASE NOTE: You will be applying for the Apprentice program and not a specific trade. Management reserves the right to place you in a specific trade.

Selectee is required to sign an Authorization Agreement, and Certification of Training Form, SF182 with Continued Service Agreement fields 15 and 16 filled in and page four signed. Failure to comply with this agreement will result in the apprentice reimbursing FRC for all tuition, books, tools, and fees.

You may be non-competitively promoted to the full performance level WG-10 after meeting all regulatory requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. You will spend up to 4 yrs. as an entry level trades person. After successfully completing all required training and experience, you will progress to the journey level. Continued employment and advancement requires satisfactory completion of classroom training and work experience. College level classroom training may include, but will not be limited to, trade skills and trade related mathematics (e.g. algebra, geometry, trigonometry), introductory sciences (e.g. metallurgy, electrical theory), and trade drawings and blueprints. You may be promoted after meeting all requirements, and upon the recommendation of management. Promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed. You are required to receive 1,800 hrs. of on-the-job training yearly under the supervision of a journey leve. FRC will make advance payment directly to the approved academic training program for the following: educational costs, tuition, materials required for lab classes, health fees and any other authorized costs. Additional expenses incurred for school (parking permits/tickets, transportation expenses to and from school, etc.) will be the responsibility of the Apprentice. You will be required to sign an agreement to work within the Department of Navy for 2 yrs. after completion of the program.

Several vacancies may be filled.

This position is covered by the Department of Defense Priority Placement Program.

A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the selectee fails to meet the pre-employment requirements, including failure to report to any of the scheduled appointments.
